Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Maxey.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After a decade+ career in advertising in Chicago, I found myself craving a more meaningful and fulfilling career. After the birth of my son, I knew it was time for a change. I wanted to strike a better balance between family life and work, and when the idea of Mom League came about, I was ALL IN! I knew this was my new calling.
Mom League started in Winston-Salem, and quickly expanded the Newborn Series to Charlotte and Raleigh. We knew the first-hand impact we were making on moms in Winston needed to happen everywhere. Raleigh was an easy choice for expansion! After a lot of hustle and networking with top-credentialed experts in the area, Mom League Raleigh took off.
Since, we have expanded to 12 U.S. cities — 3 of those markets as franchises. Mom League is co-owned by Kelly Maxey and Riley Bolton, two moms who believe that moms deserve better postpartum.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Creating a business comes with plenty of challenges — it isn’t all as pretty as Instagram makes it look! There’s a lot going on behind the scenes. But with a mission like ours — Helping All Moms Thrive TM — it’s worth every struggle and hardship.
The hardest aspects of building and running Mom League are wearing several hats with lean team, managing people (I think all business owners agree on this) and balancing work and life during summertime with limited childcare or when kids get sick.
Building the team has been the most rewarding — and challenging — aspect of it all. You have to find the right people who fit what your business needs — which is constantly evolving. Managing people can be hard because you want to be the best mentor and coach possible, while also empowering your employees to navigate challenges with confidence.
A business breakup with the original co-founder was the right move for both of us — but tough to navigate, all the same.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Mom League was founded in Winston-Salem, NC, and has since expanded to 12 U.S. cities. Mom League’s mission is to Help All Moms Thrive TM by supporting women through postpartum and beyond. There are so many changes that take place when becoming a mom for the first time — or when adding another little one to your crew. Postpartum is one of the most beautiful yet challenging times in life, posing big changes mentally, physically and emotionally, and Mom League’s Newborn Series is designed to support moms during that period of time.
Our eight-week Newborn Series brings together the same groups of moms and babies (0-12 weeks old) each week to learn from trusted local experts while building lasting friendships with other moms in the exact same stage. The Newborn Series covers all of the most relevant topics pertaining to newborn and postpartum care. Led by a licensed therapist certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C), each session covers topics like feeding baby, physical recovery, maternal mental health, sleep, infant development, relationship changes, returning to work and more.
We bring in top local experts to share evidence-based info to help guide your journey into motherhood. Better than the info — the relationships you build last. Mom League goes far beyond the 8-week series. We love that moms get lunch or coffee after class, they do brewery meetups on the weekend with the whole family, have girls nights, and celebrate their babies’ first birthdays together.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
As the Owners of Mom League, Riley and I really lean into our business mentors to help guide us when we feel stuck. We are a part of a program called Winston Starts and meet regularly with our mentors.
My business partner Riley and I have complementary strengths and we balance each other really well. While we might approach certain situations differently, we always come together with a combined perspective. We know each other’s strengths and pull those strengths out from each other. And we’re great friends, which makes working more fun and fulfilling. We are building something together that we believe in and seeing our ideas come to life is really exciting.
Most of all, we give credit to each and every mom who chooses Mom League to be a part of their postpartum journey. They then tell their friends and coworkers and the word spreads fast!
