Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Psallidas.
Diana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I made the decision to started my own mobile spray tanning business back in 2014. I’m super pale and at the time, I had two young children, it was always hard for me to try to coordinate a time that didn’t involve bath time or handling my babies too often to actually go into a tanning salon to get sprayed.
I remember thinking “if someone can just come to me after I put the kids to bed that would be fantastic!” I started doing some research and found a company I liked to get trained and certified with. After completing my training and doing some spray tans on friends, I still wasn’t quite happy with what I had to work with so I continued my research to find a compressor that wasn’t too loud so I can have a conversation with my client, something that’s lightweight that I can carry around easily and one that can handle back to back applications for tanning parties without getting too hot. I also tried out a bunch of different solutions to make sure I found the perfect fit for my business. I wanted one that obviously doesn’t turn you orange! #1 concern with first-time spray tanners, right? “Am I going to be orange?” One that didn’t have a strong smell and was also all-natural without sulfates & parabens. It took a lot of trial and error but I was finally able to offer my services in July 2014. I would always get asked if I do airbrush makeup as well since I did airbrush spray tans so after about two years of people asking for it, I finally got certified with Temptu in Manhattan, NY in 2016. I specialize in wedding and editorial makeup but I also like to play around with sfx makeup as well. When I first started my journey, I didn’t just want to start a business in hopes of making easy money, I wanted to offer a service where people enjoy their experience, got great results and build a relationship with my community, I think that’s what set me apart from the rest. I really love what I do! I love seeing the transformation and making people feel beautiful, it’s so rewarding!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely hard in the beginning to build a clientele, no one felt comfortable having a random stranger come to their house but it was important to me to make them feel comfortable, enjoy that experience and build that trust. I’ve spent a lot of money on my education, training, equipment, product and supplies to offer the best service possible for my clients, I don’t think a lot of people understand the time and money that goes on behind the scenes so when someone thinks you’re too expensive or not worth what you’re asking its hurtful so it’s been a struggle to have to remind yourself of your talent and worth.
