Meet Larry Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Williams.

Hi Larry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started drawing when I was around five, mostly stick figure battles and makeshift flipbooks. Eventually, I started reading comic books and trying to copy the illustrations found in those books. On Saturdays, my mother used to take my sister and I to the main library in Detroit (One of the most beautiful in the nation), I would always borrow Stan Lee’s “How to draw comics the Marvel Way”. This book showed me everything from anatomy to perspective, it also sparked my creative drive causing me to want to further explore art of all kinds. As I grew older, I became more fascinated with every aspect of the fine arts, I began taking art classes in school and classes on the weekend learning to paint and think like an artist.

What got me to where I am today started in high school where I began to refine my interest in the arts. Because of my early love for comics, I was drawn back to illustration at the same time I began to explore the world of graphic design. Once I graduated from high school, I put together my portfolio and applied to the College for Creative Studies where I learned more and more about illustration and graphic design.

Along the way, I was inspired by many artists from the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Jacob Lawrence, Kadir Nelson, Ray Billingsley, Saul Bass, and many more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, on of my main struggles growing up as an artist was self-doubt, always questioning myself and my work. It never felt good enough. This sense of self-doubt leads to fear of showing my work, which leads to many distractions and causing me to go days, sometimes weeks without touching a brush, pencil, or pen alike. It took the motivation of several instructors, inspirational books, museums, and other artistically driven friends to pull me from out of my creative fogginess. These days I try to created and draw every chance I get, freelancing as much as I can. I try to draw, sketch, or doodle everyday.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Illustrator/ Graphic Designer, I specialize in traditional and digital illustrations, album art, poster design, storyboarding, children’s book illustrations, apparel designs, corporate branding, logo design, product design, prints and more. I am most proud of my original illustrations and being able to use any medium I choose to get my message across.

My love, passion, and respect for the arts is what sets me apart from others, being able to draw whatever my imagination can think of!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My family and my faith most definitely deserve most of the credit. My family has been my greatest cheerleaders especially my children, their endless imagination always fuels me to be more and more creative. Many of my classmates in college helped to play big roles in the success of my business.
