Exploring Life & Business with Ranya Samara and Jessica Cummings of Absolutely Simplified

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ranya Samara and Jessica Cummings.

Hi Ranya and Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We first became friends through teaching together in the same high school math department. We quickly realized that we had a lot in common, including a shared passion for organization. At the beginning of one school year, we simultaneously started “stress cleaning” the shared math suite. It was a wonderful distraction from the pressure that is on teachers at the beginning of the school year. We not only cleaned but also transformed the space, moving items around, editing, and purging items no longer used. Our coworkers were blown away, saying the room felt bigger than before and more functional. This felt incredibly rewarding for us and the space was now a more inspiring place to collaborate with our team members. Even though we didn’t realize it at the time, this was the defining moment in eventually launching our own organizing business together: Absolutely Simplified.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being that our background is in mathematics education, starting a business was entirely new to both of us. Needless to say, there were a few obstacles when learning to work through the logistics of owning and launching an LLC. Before publicly announcing that we had started a business, we spent a lot of time on weekends organizing each other’s homes together. We learned a lot about the home organization process, from designing and planning systems to the implementation of our visions for each space. Balancing this along with full-time jobs and two young children was challenging, to say the least. This is where our partnership played a large role in our ability to motivate each other to keep going. We are each other’s biggest cheerleaders and we are always there to support each other.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a professional organizing business that helps clients create systems for their spaces that are more functional for them and their families. We consult with our clients on what their needs are for their space(s) and come up with a unique design to achieve their goals for their household. The transformations that we provide for our clients are not only beautiful but have also been easy for our clients to maintain. We take pride in the level of thought and detail we put into every system we design for our clients.

Our background in mathematics has been essential in allowing us to maximize the dimensions of any space to its fullest potential. In addition to mathematics, our coursework towards our education degrees has allowed us to understand some of the possible developmental limitations of our client’s children along with understanding behavioral habits that could be helped by our organizational systems. While we specialize in in-home organizations, we also provide virtual consultations along with pre and post moving services.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We quickly learned from the beginning that it was incredibly worth it to expand our team of organizers. Originally, we took many jobs as just the two of us but when we decided to add a team member, we realized how much more efficiently we could work. We now bring at least three organizers (often more) to each job, allowing us to transform spaces much more quickly. We are having more fun than ever before, working on jobs with our amazing team members!
