Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Condon and Erin Newton.
Hi Amy and Erin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Erin and I love local markets, food, and entertainment. Last year we were starving for events and finally by Christmas Pop-Up Raleigh opened for local shopping. When we attended, we realized there were no market type events in North Raleigh. Many were downtown or in Wake Forest. We go to church at Lifepointe on Durant Rd. and they have a perfect location to reach the community. We wanted to start an “event” not just a market, an event for the whole community to support local businesses, artists, and musicians. We do not get paid so we can keep vendor costs low. We want the community to come out and spend time together once a month to build relationships and strengthen the local vibe.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had some bumps in the road. Vendors not showing up or food trucks not following through has been an issue. Advertising and sharing our vision has been another.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Amy – I have been an occupational therapist for 24 years. My husband, David, is an artist and musician. We owned a coffee shop in the Factory, Espresso Self Cafe, which featured local art, coffee, music, wine, and food. We are all about supporting the growth of the arts. I believe strongly that the more people know each other the less hate and division we will have in our community. The mission of the market came from this; To help people find strength in their community.
Erin – I have been in various positions over the years, particularly as an executive assistant to high-level administrators. I am an artist, writer, and musician. I love supporting local artists and musicians. In my career, I have assisted others in building businesses and developing strong teams, in my role with the market I can help build my community and help others.
What matters most to you? Why?
I think both of us would say our faith matters the most to us. We believe that we must live our faith with others to form a strong community because this world can be harsh. Alone, we can become despondent, depressed, and lonely. Over the last 18 months, we have seen an increase in all these problems, not to mention the economic toll it has taken. With the market, we may be able to help people find acceptance, friendship, and financial gain, even if it’s only for a short time.
