Rising Stars: Meet Kayla Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Davis.

Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my online business my sophomore year in college at Howard University. A Typical college student desperately searching for a hobby or something to be good at to make some extra money along the way. But I also knew it would be one of my many callings in life aside from my future career in the medical field. Growing up in my pre-teen years, I’ve always admired the girl bosses or female entrepreneurs that crossed my screen on social media. I always dreamed of someday being able to create something I could call my own just like these women had already done. Getting it started would be one thing, building it up properly and slowly, with love and compassion with no guidance or experience what so ever would be another. It was definitely challenging. My time of becoming a business owner consisted of sleepless nights, the highs, the lows, and moments where I thought about giving it all up. But I didn’t.

As a small-town girl, born and raised in Weldon, NC I didn’t see many entrepreneurs. So I didn’t have the guidance of where to actually start & what to do and not to do. So when nobody offered me advice I studied. When I couldn’t turn for help, I researched. When I failed, I tried again. When sells didn’t roll in I prayed. I prayed because no amount of advertising, or research or studying could give me exactly what I was asking for without God. I couldn’t have done any of this without God & my Mom honestly. They were and still are the backbone of my business. As North Carolina’s finest J.Cole once said, I turned a dollar into a dream. I risked it all and bet it all on me. That wasn’t luck at all that was God, I was destined. I was and still am blessed. God has given me the opportunity to lead, to mentor, and to keep pushing another day to give back to everyone who kept me afloat along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of the many struggles I found myself facing along the way was maintaining my social media presence. Successful online business owners will tell you that advertising & your social media presence overall plays a huge role in how strong your business will grow. It sets the foundation, it keeps the customers coming back. I found this difficult along the way. It took trial and error. The key is to be consistent. Practice your graphic skills, set up your posts. These are all things that can help lessen the headache.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I recently graduated Howard University with my B.S. in Health Science. I am currently interning at a Primary Care medical facility. One of the many things deemed necessary to gain access into the Physician Assistant programs nationwide. Where I plan to become a Physician Assistant and earn my Master’s In Health Science. I’m proud of my accomplishments thus far especially being a graduate of a prestigious University such as Howard University. Where icons, activists, artists, politicians, and creators well before me have walked the same grounds. I am both honored & humbled to share the title of being a Howard Alumna with so many great individuals. I never for a second doubted my ability to do so it just still feels so surreal that God blessed me with the opportunity.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I believe in being destined. I believe some things not being in God’s will. I believe everyone’s path is already laid out. I do believe you get what you give. So if you put out bad into the universe, you can receive unnecessary trials and tribulations, heartache, & in this case one would consider “bad luck”. If you give love, put out happiness, work hard, and always remember to give back not just financially but mentally. Always be willing to help. That’s how you receive good. That’s how you gain “good luck”.
