Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Smith.

Hi Briana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I became a doula through my public health degree. I was outraged by the maternal-fetal health outcome statistics in our country. I wanted to do “boots on the ground” work to make change one family at a time, and I found that doula work was the most efficient way to do that. Many people are unaware of what doulas do and how their birth experiences can be different.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been an interesting road, not smooth or bumpy. I used to provide doula support for incarcerated people in labor until we lost grant funding for our program, which was disheartening. Additionally, over my years of being a doula, the out of hospital birth options have dwindled (number of birth centers and home birth midwives). I have a vision of what reproductive health support should look like from preconception through eighteen years of parenting, but unfortunately politics and economics disallow my vision from coming to fruition.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Birth and Beyond Inc, we offer a variety of support services related to reproductive health. We offer: birth doula support, fertility doula support, postpartum doula support, placenta encapsulation, childbirth and early parenting education, and infant feeding support. We are most proud of our inclusive services that help families from preconception through early parenting. What sets us apart from others is the individualized support and tailored education we provide our families.
