Inspiring Conversations with Matt Blasek of The X-Cleaners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Blasek.

Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started out The X-Cleaners back in December 2020. I have been a teacher for almost nine years. Although I love teaching, I felt that I needed to try something different–and I also wanted to be my own boss. Since I was a little kid, cleanliness has been very important to me. My mother always says I was a “very clean child”. Whenever I spilled something on myself, I got desperate to get my clothes changed. We can tell that I like things clean and organized–and that it’s always been like that. Back in December, my friend’s husband suggested that we opened a cleaning business. At first, I was not sure it’d be a good idea.

After all, I had never cleaned professionally in my life. But I was also very unhappy with the cleaning services I had experienced. I missed having a more complete, detailed, top to bottom clean. A few weeks after sleeping on the idea, my friend and I decided to give it a try. So we started by writing our business plan to see how possible that would be. Our next step would be choosing a name. We went through several options, but we really wanted something that was also connected to who we are. We finally decided we would be “The Cleaning Force” since we both love Star Wars. However, that name was already in use. I then mentioned to my friend I really like the X-men and all they represent–the different, the gifted, the special. That was when I came up with the name “The X-Cleaners” as a joke and my friend loved it. “The X-Cleaners it is then!” we both said after only a few seconds.

The X-Cleaners was created to be a different cleaning company. Besides offering very thorough and high-quality services, we are also extremely strict when it comes to using only non-toxic and biodegradable products. We believe this is the only way possible when you want to stay healthy and be mindful of environmental issues.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been a smooth road. In the beginning, the struggles were more related to the amount of information I had to digest in order to make it work. I worked 12 to 15 hours everyday to develop our systems, worksheets, apply for documents and all. Deciding what products and tools we were going to use was also not simple. We had to try several different options–which also means a lot of money spent. Another big struggle was when my friend and business partner decided to leave the company. Not only it was not expected, but we had also outlined all the processes and projects for a two-person owned business.

Of course, throughout the way, there are always some obstacles we were not expecting to face. I have thought of giving up many times, but I’m here, hanging in there, and I will always do my best to make The X-Cleaners grow a bit more everyday. I love this company and this love is what keeps me going!

The X-Cleaners is a Cleaning Service which operates in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. We offer high-quality and thorough residential cleaning and organizations services. After becoming interested in cleaning, I realized how many mistakes I made daily whenever cleaning and how harmful all those chemicals were. We’re happy to be offering our community what we call the evolution of cleaning. From our cleaning cloths (all high-quality microfiber cloths) to the cars we drive: technology, efficiency, quality, care.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Opening this company was a huge risk to me. I have invested all my time and money into it–and, at first, that scared me big time. This experience has also shown me that if we don’t take risks, we’re going nowhere. We have to let go of some things and leave our comfort zone in order to accomplish bigger things.
