Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosa Ahumada.
Hi Rosa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell into it being a hairstylist when a friend of mine mentioned hair school after graduating high school in 2001. I was a young single mom with a new baby and needed a flexible career to provide for my daughter. I didn’t have four years to spare in college or a support system to attempt it, so nine months of hair school was very appealing to me. I had always had a creative side, so I figured I could do it.
I worked in a color salon for many years during the beginning of my career. There I was able to get some fantastic education to further my knowledge behind the chair. After marrying and having my second child, I needed to shift gears a little and focus on my family. I dabbled in being my own boss in a booth rental salon & and in a studio setting but always felt as if it were missing something. Someone once told me I have a natural gift for making people feel at ease, and I wanted to create a space that encompassed that. I wanted a space where I could provide my guest with an experience when they received their hair service. The little details were important to me, like wine being served in a glass and awesome music playing.
I opened Ron Carlos Salon in 2012, just one month after having my third child. I had a low budget to get things started. I stumbled across a salon that was selling all of their inventory and for a very reasonable price, I purchased everything. I sold off what I didn’t need to generate some cash to purchase the items I did need and over time I built walls, painted, moved things around a million times, learned how to build a team with the same vision I do to all work together to create what is now RCS!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has grown organically overall. At first, my mission and vision were not as clear as it is today. I had to involve, grow, get out of my comfort zone. I had to learn to be a leader to my team, be vulnerable and manage the work-life balance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
RCS provides a variety of color services, haircuts, and extensions. Within each of these categories, we have stylist that are fine-tuned and well advanced educated. For haircuts: curly cutting, shags and bobs, and long layers. For hair color: balayage, blonding, grey blending & coverage, dimensional color, and highlights. Texture: Invisible beaded row extensions, perms & smoothing treatments.
Each of our stylists is a master of their craft and brings their knowledge to our team. They are committed to consistent success through advanced education and elevated guest service. This is what we are known for and what sets us apart.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I think we learned to take a step back, realign ourselves with our core values and focus on what is most important to us.
