Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Hutchins.
Hi Tim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a love of photography but only in the past several years did I realize that it was more than just a hobby. I realized that I had finally found my true passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Due to my love of night photography and the many challenges that it presents, I had to fail many many times and continue to press forward to learn techniques that would allow my visions to become a reality. Thankfully I had people who were willing to come on the journey with me that allowed me the opportunities to improve my craft.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
After being drawn to photography it seemed that night photography literally “found me”. I knew that the night is where I would fulfill my passion and creativity. I had a vision of combining city nightscapes and models to create something that was unique and interesting. Instead of using a studio, I wanted my backdrop to be the city lights and cityscapes of Winston-Salem and Charlotte and eventually I dream of doing night shoots in Venice Italy, and all over the world. About the same time that I had begun shooting models in the city, I discovered that in a short hour and a half drive from where I live there were dark enough skies to photograph the Milky Way. When I first set eyes on the glorious night sky from the Blue Ridge Parkway, I knew that I had to learn to photograph what I was experiencing. I would never be the same after being under that magnificent night sky.
So, a new journey began and I eventually learned how to create star trails and how to find and shoot the Milky Way. Once again, I started having a vision of adding models in my images but now I had to find a way to shoot models under the night sky and specifically with the Milky Way as my backdrop. This was a challenge that I didn’t know if I would ever be able to master. There was so much that I needed to learn and with many failed attempts I almost gave up but once again, there was always someone (usually Vanessa Chavez @raninessa Instagram) who was willing to spend many hours in the middle of the night to help me work out all of the difficulties and after a couple of years I could finally see the results that I had hoped for. After spending more hours than I can count trying to master these types of shots, I will never stop learning and will continue to experiment with new techniques to create the most beautiful images that I am capable of.
What makes you happy?
Spending time with my son probably is the most enjoyable thing in my life. Experiencing life with him before he completely grows up is my goal. I also love to travel. I am thankful that as a young teenager I was able to participate in mission trips to Guatemala and Peru and understand that life is different in other parts of the world and much more difficult than what most people realize. Travel has a way of opening our eyes and seeing the world differently.
