Today we’d like to introduce you to Bee Simms.
Hi Bee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always been super creative and loved to explore ways to express myself through art. As a child, I found so much joy in writing impromptu songs about different scenarios that I experienced and sharing them with my family and friends. Creating music is something that I have truly loved since I was a kid, however, I limited myself with the belief that it could only be a hobby for me. Being a kid from a low-income household, quickly taught me the importance of surviving and sustaining my needs.
My upbringing pushed me to focus more on sustaining my needs rather than my wants and hobbies. Education was my main focus and is essentially what “saved” me from poverty. My tunnel vision for a better life fueled me to obtain my Masters, accomplish all my career goals, become financially stable, and be the first of many generations to reach the levels that I had. In 2017, I remember reminiscing about all that I had accomplished and writing everything that I was grateful for down in my gratitude journal. I had overcome so much in my life but, there was a piece of me that still felt unfulfilled. At that moment I realized that although I had so much to be grateful for and proud that I accomplished, there was still a major piece of me that I was limiting and ignoring – my creativity.
I had to reprogram my belief that my career was the only way to live the life I wanted and, that making music and making a living off of my creativity was not too far-fetched. I was guilty of putting unnecessary limits on myself and I’m so thankful that my mindset started to shift and I began to realize that I could do it all! From 2017 – 2019, I got back into songwriting and started exercising my creative muscle on a more consistent basis, all while maintaining my career. I started attending more open mic events, writing songs on a daily basis, and collaborating with other artists and producers in the area.
In the summer of 2019, I released my debut single ‘Summer Fling’ and other single releases followed after that. In October 2020, I released my 5-track debut EP ‘Moodie’ and received an overwhelming amount of support from my fans, family. and friends. The amount of fulfillment that I get from making music that others are able to relate to is unmatched. Being an emerging artist definitely has its pros and cons but, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m thankful for the huge amounts of ambition and courage that God placed in me to follow my dreams and the resilience to continue pushing forward even when the odds are against me. I am nowhere near done with accomplishing all that I would like to, however, I am definitely on my way!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been far from easy! I have frequently wondered where/why/when/how I will turn my dreams into reality. I have had days where I have became annoyed with myself because I felt like I was so far behind and things were not happening how I planned them to. I have struggled with negative self-talk and bouts of imposter syndrome, believing the lies that I was telling myself about not being good enough or ready. I had to learn the hard way that you must be your own number-one fan. I learned that you won’t always feel motivated to keep going but that’s when your discipline must kick in to continue the journey towards reaching your goal. “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an emerging Hip-Hop Artist/Songwriter from Raleigh, NC. I make music from the perspective of the underdogs. I make music that represents those who go against all odds. I make music for those who don’t fit the script but flip the script. I make music for bosses. I make music for queens. I make music for those who aren’t afraid to say what they mean and mean what they say.
I love to make music that leaves my listeners feeling empowered. It’s super hard to listen to one of my tracks and not feel like you’re the most important person in the room once the song is over. In an oversaturated market like Hip-Hop, it is important to me that I avoid making mediocre music that fits the current trend. I put a great amount of thought into my lyrics and I try to incorporate valuable messages into my verses, hooks, and clever punchlines. Being gifted with the capacity to do this is what sets me apart from other artists.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Sometimes I feel like I have no clue what I am doing but I just keep going. To the readers, I just want to say: DO IT SCARED! You’ll be surprised how things work in your favor once you take that first step/leap of faith towards your goal/dream.
