Daily Inspiration: Meet Riley Woodell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Woodell.

Hi Riley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a child, I’ve always been a fan of journaling every morning and treating my journal as the ongoing story of my life. I like to think of my daily life as an endless book of endless chapters. The chapters of my modeling career began when I was 15 years old. I had multiple friends, family, and strangers at the grocery store who would always ask me the same question in the same format. “Hey, this is gonna sound weird, but you’re so tall. Have you ever thought about modeling?” For a while I brushed it off and just felt flattered by the question, but nothing more.

Then when I was 17 years old, I had the opportunity to try my luck with an agency and the rest is history. I fell in love with the creative side of shoots, the experimentation that comes with collaborations, and overall the people you meet are hard-working and like-minded. In 2018 I had the chance to model in Rome and since then I’ve done everything from NYFW to local shoots in the Raleigh area. I’ve had nearly 20 magazine publications, locally and internationally and these days I’ve been flying solo without an agent and loving it. I’m so grateful for the adventures each day brings, no matter how big or small and overall I’m just enjoying the journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
People don’t take you seriously as a young female sometimes and that can be challenging. It was especially hard getting started because when you’re 17, you expect people to just acknowledge your dream and wish you well; that’s not usually the case because you’re living in a world filled with people who all have dreams.

Some people can be brutal or say things just to hurt your feelings. If I had a quarter for all the times a designer told me I needed to be a size smaller if I wanted to work in fashion, then I’d be a rich woman.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an editorial model by trade. I’d say I don’t fall under the category of conventional beauty but that’s my calling card. I’m so proud of how I’ve been able to overcome insecurities with modeling. It’s not always the same story for everyone, but for me, I’m really blessed to have developed such a thick skin over the years.

It’s made me strong because I’ve heard it all. My mom has always told me that someone will always be cheering for you to fail and you just have to ignore that. My grandparents were Jewish and French so my angular facial features don’t exactly blend into a crowd.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I really want to work my way into being a creative director. It’s such a niche job, but I find joy and excitement in creating a concept and carrying it out in a shoot.
