Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Wilmoth.
Hi Allie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am the owner of Wilmoth Interiors, a design firm specializing in full-service design, project management, and residential remodels. A year into owning my business, I had the opportunity to join the HGTV Love It or List It, design team, as the Design Coordinator. This opportunity led to great connections in the design world as well as a wealth of knowledge on residential remodeling and construction.
I knew I wanted to be an Interior Designer since I was 12 years old. I would redecorate my room and friend’s rooms every chance I got. In high school, I began taking classes for Interior Design and competed in student design competitions.
Following high school, I went to Meredith College and received my BS in Interior Design. I then went to Liberty University and received a Master’s in Business Administration, with the intention of opening my own Interior Design Studio. I am currently working towards my NCIDQ, a national certification for Interior Designers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I initially went to school for design, I wanted to focus on health care design. However when I graduated, the industry was still recovering from the 2008 recession and interior design firms were not hiring entry-level designers. I ended up spending five years working in the furniture industry. There I received sales and management training. I use that training every single day. It was not where I initially saw myself, but it taught me so much. Had I gone straight into health care design from graduation, I do not believe I would have taken some of the same risks that ultimately lead me to work on Love It or List It and falling in love with residential remodels.
The road to owning Wilmoth Interiors was not the one I envisioned. However, I am so happy I followed my gut and went where the road took me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in residential remodels. I assist my clients from pre-construction design to the final pillow being placed on the sofa. My clients come to me because their home style is not functioning for their lifestyle. They know I will bring creative solutions that are beyond their imagination. A client comes to me feeling overwhelmed by their home and unhappy. I erase that burden. My favorite moment is when a client says “I never would have thought of that”. I always reply, “that is what I am here for”.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
When I was young, I wanted to be a fashion designer. My all-knowing grandmother said to me “you don’t want to be a fashion designer; you will not make any money. You should be an interior designer.” At the time, I had no idea that interior design could be a profession. From then on I was hooked. Thanks Grandma!
