Conversations with Giovanna Torrieri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanna Torrieri.

Hi Giovanna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My passion for storytelling began at a young age. And when I say that, I mean elementary school me was running around my backyard using my parent’s laptop camera before I was lucky enough to receive the first camera of my own. Now, I’m an ambitious and creative photographer who is passionate about capturing the real, raw, and intimate moments as they happen. I’m a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, where I studied business and photojournalism. These two areas of emphasis have prepared me to offer my clients a professional and seamless experience with communication and a unique gallery of timeless photographs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, to say the least, but it is a road I’m happy to have taken. Entrepreneurship is not for the weak-hearted, and that has made me a workaholic at times. But at the end of the day, I am so grateful that I get to do what I love and make others happy through my work. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The biggest struggle was that starting a photography business is much more than being a great photographer. It is in fact running a business, so creating a customer experience (it is a service!), and figuring out the business side of things is crucial and needs to be prioritized before the creativity even comes in.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an NC-based traveling wedding, graduation, engagement, and lifestyle photographer and videographer passionate about telling true stories that evoke real and raw emotion.

I’m a tar heel, iced coffee lover, and cat lady who moved from NYC to an NC horse farm as a young girl. This gave me all the versatility I’ll ever need at any shoot, and that’s what sets me apart from the rest. I know how to adapt to constantly changing environments, lighting, and handle pressure well. That is vital, especially when you are shooting a wedding where the timelines never stay on track. Because I have both creative photography and business videography experience, I really am a jack of all trades.

I am probably most proud of the photojournalism work I completed while at UNC-Chapel Hill. I was able to share the stories of so many unique individuals which brought me places all the way to a hot air balloon in the sky to witnessing childbirth to finding myself in the middle of a college basketball scandal — and capturing all of those moments. The documentary I produced on the girl’s basketball team won 1st place in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, a national competition.

How do you think about happiness?
Creating the images in my head in reality and making them come to life is so rewarding. Especially when those concepts turn into photoshoots for my clients and then they end up with images that they will cherish forever.
