Conversations with Raina Cassity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raina Cassity.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in a working-class family. No one in my family was taught about business or investing. I didn’t learn about them in high school or college either. It wasn’t until years later that I realized that I was making my life harder by not knowing more about these topics. So I started to learn about both and eventually started my own business. It was in education and working with kids. I eventually sold the business and went into selling life and health insurance. Meanwhile, I kept reading and learning everything I could about money, success, and building wealth. I was also trading stocks on the side and became quite good at it.

Following my stint as an insurance broker, I co-founded a web design business. This was right before Covid. Not much was happening with the business during the first few months of lock-down so I started putting together an idea I had for a YouTube channel. I wanted the channel to educate people on topics like investing and business–all the things I wish I had known when I was younger. Luckily, I had become friends with an amateur videographer and he agreed to help me out. We began filming in January 2021. It was a bumpy road in the beginning: I was nervous and couldn’t remember what I was going to say and the video editing wasn’t the greatest. But we kept going and the videos have improved greatly. Now I can comfortably tell people about my channel, Empire with Raina Cassity, and know that the videos are helpful and of higher quality.

Meanwhile, my web design business never really took off. I was, however, getting gigs as a freelance financial writer. Being the entrepreneurial person that I am, I decided to turn this service into a business. I recently launched the Cassity Agency, which offers writing and graphic design services for the financial and general business industries. But I’m not stopping there: I’m also going to be launching a wholesale home goods business in the fall of 2021. This is a field I never thought I would be in but I stumbled across a great opportunity and decided to take a chance.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As I mentioned before, starting the YouTube channel was nerve-racking. I’m not a natural speaker but I felt like I had some important tips to share and wanted to reach a wider audience. I kept practicing until my YouTube presentation improved.

As for starting and growing a business, it’s always challenging. I had to start my first business on a shoe-string budget. But it taught me how to be resourceful. It also forced me to really put myself out there. You can’t start and grow a business by being meek.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My YouTube channel, Empire with Raina Cassity, talks about money, success, and life management skills. I’m proud of the fact that I can relate to the average person. I wasn’t brought up in a wealthy household and had to teach myself about business and investing.

What’s great about the channel is that I bring a fresh perspective to common topics. For example, I recently introduced a list of must-read books on money and success but I refused to list the ones “everyone” knows, like The 4-Hour Workweek or How to Win Friends and Influence People. (Anyone who reads books on these topics has heard of these two books.) Instead, I chose books that I found helpful or inspiring but that most people wouldn’t have heard of before.

I also love to add humor to the videos when possible. I love to laugh and feel that a lot of people are far too serious. I want to show that you can have a good time while still building wealth. Why wait until you’re retired to enjoy your life? That seems like a waste to me.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think YouTube is going to continue to grow. Not everyone is on social media but everyone uses YouTube.

As for wholesaling and writing/graphic design for other businesses, I think both areas will grow, too. With wholesale, sky’s the limit! There are so many options as far as sourcing goes. For writing and graphic design, companies will continue to need content for their websites and social media. That’s not going to change. In fact, it’s probably just going to get more and more competitive when it comes to capturing attention.
