Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Phillips.
Hi Brett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my start in music at a very early age. My parents are both musicians and enrolled me in piano lessons as a child. When I was 12, I got my first guitar and decided that playing music was what I wanted to do with my life. I started writing and recording my own music not long after and started teaching lessons and performing locally at age 15. I later went to Campbell University and graduated with a degree in Music Education and Performance. Since then, it’s been consistent playing, recording, performing, and teaching. I’ve been playing lots of shows in the Fayetteville and Triangle areas this summer, which has been a lot of fun.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Life as a musician is a very rewarding, but challenging experience. Since hours can be crazy, balancing personal life, practice, and professional life is very important. It can be difficult at times, but it has been totally worth it for me. I get the satisfaction of doing what I love and being able to share it with people, as well as the world thanks to the internet.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. I’m mostly known for playing music that is guitar-centric and stylistically eclectic. I have a background in classical and jazz music, but I love rock and pop as well and try to merge all my influences into my own style. At the moment I am focusing on writing and recording a solo album. However, I have played in numerous bands in the past and have worked on some pretty cool projects. I’ve played guitar for my band the Separate for over a decade now. We’ve released 3 albums that I am proud of. They are all available free to stream online.
I’m also very fortunate to have been given opportunities as a musician, such as my band’s jingle being used for years on a local Raleigh radio station, participating in national talent shows, teaching hundreds of students, and having some of my compositions used in viral videos online. Currently, I’m writing and recording a solo EP and hope to have that out soon. I post my music frequently on my website and YouTube page, so there’s always something new to listen to from me.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is being able to create and play the music that is enjoyed not only by myself but by my audience. Music is such a personal experience, and sharing my expressions through my songs and compositions has been a great joy in my life.
