Today we’d like to introduce you to MaDrique.
Hi MaDrique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a recording artist, creator, founder, and an ultimate hustler! I pride myself in making good music for myself, my supports, and inspiring the homies around me. I also write, produce and compose music for myself and others. Another love of mine is fashion. I love clothes, sneakers and just being clean. My love for sneakers has always been a part of me, ever since I was a kid, whether it’s Nike SBs, Uptempo’s the list goes on.
To tell you more about my music journey, I was 5 years old watching tv and I saw the Snoop Dog, “Gin and Juice” video and I was like “yooo that’s tight, I want to do that.” Being that young of course I didn’t know what I was doing but I tried. Fast forward to 2006, I released my first mixtape, “DA MONSTA.” The response I received from my peers; I knew at those moments it was possible; that started my musical journey. I’ve been rapping for 15 years, there have been tons of projects released. I was inspired to create my own record label, Dreams of Children Music Group (DOCMG), in 2009. DOCMG is a record label and lifestyle brand, we also produce video content, and fashion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh man, you’re trying to get deep ahaha I’ll be lying if I say the journey has been smooth. Of course, any time you’re chasing it’s going to have it’s up and down. I’ve had to deal with peer pressure, overthinking, non-believers, doubting myself, and just overall disappointment. When you’re creating something, you have moments you feel like your life is about to change and moments you feel like it’s over ahaha. I’ve dealt with all of that. At the end of the day, it builds characters and resilience. We have to use our hardships and put them towards the wins.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My dedication to my craft is what sets me apart from others. I live by the motto of never stop working, it’s what drives me to push forward every day. My work ethic can’t be argued with, work has to get done. Having a clear vision of the end goal is what’s important.
When it comes to me as an artist I’m known for my flow and my ability to story tell. I want my listener to visualize what I’m saying. Also, my ear for beats is another stand-out feature I have. I feel like all of them two together is what helps me put together great bodies a work, along with the support around me.
One thing I’m proud of is sticking it out because a lot of people from my era gave up. I’m also proud of me being able to keep my mind on track due to all the challenges I’ve faced. As well as, all of my accomplishments because I was able to achieve a lot of things, I never thought I could do.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Man, that’s a good question… to be honest with you I don’t think I found happiness until two years ago. My happiness came from me realizing and accepting the way things are and having an appreciation for how far I’ve come. A lot of time, especially with social media we compare. For so long, I forgot to acknowledge my wins because I was worried about what someone else was doing, which distracted me. After I was honest with myself and was able to acknowledge all that, I have completed and overcame I was able to become happier. Now I look at everything with joy. Honestly, when I was working on my recently released project “KNOW WHAT YOU WANT,” I was thinking about all I want out of life, and my overall thought was happiness.
