Community Highlights: Meet Malik Logan of The Tailored Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Logan.

Hi Malik, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In May of 2019, I relocated to Raleigh, NC from Fayetteville, NC. I landed a job, in Raleigh, at one of the top furniture chain stores. While there, I often helped customers through a process called “reselection”. They would come in to reselect on a different item because the item they previously purchased didn’t work in their home. While helping those customers, I realized that most of them had no idea what they were looking for or what they actually needed. I started to dig deeper and ask more detailed questions to figure out the best furniture pieces that would fit their home needs! Customers started to hire me to further decorate their homes for them. I knew I found my calling at that time! Speed you up to today, I was furloughed off of work in march of 2020 due to Covid-19.

During that time, I started to dig a little deeper and educate myself on interior design and the industry. I knew I wanted to create a side hustle doing this, however, this side hustle turned into a full-time business, which turned into me resigning from my full-time job and birthing my baby – the tailored interiors!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would definitely be lying if I said it’s been a smooth road! My biggest struggle starting out was finding my niche. I struggled for the longest finding out who I wanted to cater to. One of my mentors, Ashley Ross, stated: “If you’re catering to everyone, you’re catering to no one.” That resonated in me heavily! I was trying to design for the masses and not a specific audience.

I found my niche (men’s interiors) and that’s when I started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t get me wrong, I still struggle every single day, but I make sure I learn from whatever I’m going through and I use that to propel me forward!

Advice for finding a mentor: Find someone in your field / industry who exemplifies exactly what you aspire to be!

Try to build genuine connections when networking! Find someone (or a group) who shares the same interests/passions as you! That circle will be the people who will understand you the most and will also be the shoulder for you to cry on.
