Conversations with Jenna White-Ysern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna White-Ysern.

Hi Jenna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

When I was in high school I always did my friend’s hair and makeup for dances, school plays, and just for fun, however making it my career path never quite felt like an option. So I ended up at state college but I always thought of cosmetology as something that maybe I would do in my free time. However the longer I was in college the more I realized that I wasn’t pursuing my passion. I ended up quoting college and started at a cosmetology school that was in the town I was living in and never looked back.

I always say going to cosmetology school was one of the best decisions of my life. After graduating I immediately started working in a salon as a commission stylist. After almost a year in that salon, I moved into a booth rental chair in a different salon taking as anyone I could get my hands on so I could perfect my craft. I stayed in that salon for about 6 years. After that was a huge life change of moving from California to North Carolina where I’ve settled into the salon I’m at now in Fayetteville.

Making such a big change made me unsure of how I would cultivate business in such a new place. Luckily I wasn’t starting over I was starting from experience. I also utilize social media to acquire customers and get my name out there. I still have big goals in my career that I am pursuing and know that I am still in the middle of my journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think one of the biggest struggles I faced is when you are your own business owner everything comes out of your own pocket, there is no paid vacation, no sick time it’s all on you. For a good portion of the beginning of my career, I worked managing a coffee shop as well as working in a salon. I’d open the shop at 5:30 work till 12 and go straight into the salon and work till 6 or 7. I did this six days a week for 4 years.

I think this was one of the biggest struggles because I missed out on sleep and getting to do things with friends but investing in myself and my future was more important. I was willing to sacrifice to create the dream that I had in my mind

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist in North Carolina and in California. I specialize in fantasy hair colors as well as blondes. I’m also known as a makeup artist. I think what sets me apart from others is my artistic vision and that I am not afraid to create looks for my clients that others may be intimidated to do.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I think the biggest takeaway is nothing in life can be planned for and we aren’t promised a tomorrow so we should do the things we desire today.
