Today we’d like to introduce you to Unique George.
Hi Unique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always interested in beauty, makeup, and fashion. I went to college for Fashion Design and Merchandising at NCAT and while there worked behind the scenes with modeling groups doing makeup, styling, and set design. After graduation, life took over and I found myself working in corporate America. In 2011, I was burnt out from call center and retail life and decided to embark on a career change. I enrolled in Miller Motte College for Esthetics. After graduating from the program, I became licensed and decided to focus on makeup. I worked at two well-known makeup counters, Lancome and Mac, for many years before deciding to focus on my own brand. Then Unique Enhancements Makeup Artistry was born! I was also the Artistry of Excellence Awards 2018 receipt for “Artist on the Rise”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I still work full time in corporate America due to it provides me security since I am a single mother of two children. So, I only work my business part-time. It can sometimes be difficult to juggle all the demands of motherhood, working a full-time job, running a small business, and finding time for myself. As a makeup artist, my busiest times are on the weekends or during the holidays when people have special events going on. So, I had to learn to have a healthy work/life balance. Also gaining consistent clients has been a struggle. I am just currently becoming more confident in knowing my niche and target markets. This is a career where you have to be sure to stay on trend with the best techniques and products as you consistently grow your skills. It’s important to budget (not buying every new makeup product that comes out) but also invest in yourself wisely.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a makeup artist. I specialize in soft glam and bridal makeup. I’m experienced in working with all skin tones, types, and ages. I think what sets me apart from other makeup artists is that I still want you to look like you when you leave my chair, but I just add a little “razzle dazzle”. I want your foundation to look like skin and the entire look to be effortless. I don’t want to feel like you have to use a filter when you take a picture of my work. My work is a filter within itself. But I do love to experiment and have fun. I love fluffy lashes, a glowing highlight and a bold lip.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Be personable. You definitely have to be a people person and have a charismatic personality. You want your clients to feel comfortable when they are in your chair.
