Inspiring Conversations with Laura Johnson of Moveology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Johnson.

Hi Laura, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Laura. I am a wife, mother of 3 sons ages 22, 21, and 13. I have a BS degree in Accounting and an MBA (which I obtained as a single mother of 2 preschoolers). I have my CrossFit Level 1 and Precision Nutrition Level 1 coaching certification. I am a master/scaled CrossFit Athlete, Nutrition Coach, founder of Clayton Ruck Club, and community volunteer…My 17-year long career as a Senior Financial Analyst with the same real estate investment company ended when COVID claimed 2020. Since that time, so many other parts of who I am have been allowed to flourish. Moveology was born from that flourishing. It exists to change people’s lives through encouraging them to fuel their bodies, move their bodies and allow their bodies to achieve fitness. Moving our bodies creates the space for fitness, healing, and growth as individuals and communities. Moveology provides people with the tools they need to succeed in their personal journeys to fitness.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth doing comes easily and without obstacles. Many of the obstacles I’ve faced over the years have provided me with the grit and perseverance to pivot after being laid off and open my own business. Being open not quite a year, profitability is still a concern, but right or wrong, it’s not my main concern. What’s more important to me is providing a service to my community. If my business/store somehow helps people improve their lives through making the choice to take care of their bodies better, I consider that success.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I opened Moveology in November 2020. It is a fitness clothing and accessory store located in Downtown Clayton, NC. This town is our own little Mayberry, right here in The Triangle, and is probably one of the best-kept secrets in this area. Our Main Street is quaint and bustling with a growing mix of businesses, restaurants, shopping, bars, and destinations. But…my store is unique and unlike anything else, our town has to offer. You won’t find big-name brands when you come in to shop. Instead, you’ll find products from veteran-owned businesses, businesses that employ people in recovery getting back on their feet, small businesses just starting out, brands that aren’t sold anywhere else close by. We have such a vibrant, active community here. The Clayton Area Runners is our local run club, meeting 3 or more times per week with over 800 members. The Clayton Ruck Club, which I started in 2020 has almost 200 members. We have the Neuse River Trial which is part of the Mountains to Sea trail where walkers, runners, cyclists, ruckers can go from Downtown Clayton all the way to Falls Lake if they so choose. And we can’t forget about the countless CrossFit gyms, Bootcamps, and Globo Gyms in the area, all full of people trying to be just a little bit better than the day before. I wanted Moveology to provide them all what they need for their wellness journey.

Some exciting news! Moveology is currently located upstairs from First Street Tavern at 115 E. First Street but we will be moving to 215 E. Main Street this fall! Our first (but definitely not our last) storefront! In this new location, we will offer all the same great brands we currently have and then some! Plus, we will offer grab-n-go healthy meals and nutrition coaching services. We are patiently waiting for construction to be complete in our new space so we can begin the next phase of our journey!

How do you think about luck?
I honestly don’t believe in luck. I believe, if you try to do good in your community and lift the people up around you, that positive energy comes back around. I was also lucky enough growing up to have parents that taught me I could do anything I wanted if I worked hard at it and I’ve proven that to myself time and time again.
