Hidden Gems: Meet April Buchanan of The Perky Lady

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Buchanan. 

Hi April, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The concept of The Perky Lady first came from having many absolutely terrible experiences bra shopping myself. I always thought bra shopping should be an experience. Intimate, special, fun, and should make you feel empowered. What I found over and over again was the exact opposite. Cold retail stores and hours of unsuccessful online shopping with bulk uninspiring selections, less than enthusiastic sales staff, and nothing that fit my body. I would stand in front of the mirror in the dressing room and feel absolutely horrible about myself – and I carried that around with me. 

When I looked around, I saw other women struggling like I was. There was clearly a need for something less commercial and more personal. A safe place where women could come into a judgment-free zone with soft surfaces and feel empowered to express themselves. A stress-free place where they had colorful vivacious choices and felt like everything was made for them. Where their body concerns melted away and they left feeling like they could conquer anything. I didn’t just want to open another retail store, I wanted to create relationships. I wanted to influence my clients’ lives in a positive way through their visits. I wanted to give them the same experience I had when I discovered beautiful great fitting bras and lingerie. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Both personal and professional challenges arise…I think that’s called life. So, you just have to be as flexible and creative as you can and press forward. The pandemic shutdown is a great example. We had to pivot our business model so that we were compliant and safe but still serve our clients. Our fittings were always in person and in close proximity to our clients. Our solution was to bring our Perky Lady services directly into their homes. Virtual bra fittings and personal shopping experiences were launched. We then quickly combined those services with live shopping on social media and provided additional delivery options that allowed clients to get their Perky Lady fix without leaving the safety and comfort of their homes. Our fast, flexible, and creative response to the pandemic is why we are still here and thriving today. By combining in-store and at-home Perky Lady experiences these offerings have stuck around. It works for so many people in so many different situations and brings an even more convenient way to shop for our nationwide and global clients. Again, all without sacrifices The Perky Lady experience.

We love being located in a charming neighborhood in Apex. Apex is a warm, safe, and inviting small town where you are able to soak up all those amazing local vibes. We are surrounded by locally-owned small businesses and beautiful neighborhoods to walk through. Apex is conveniently located for all of the surrounding areas too! Go shopping, grab dinner, go for a walk, and hop right back on the interstate without having to ever go into the city.
