Meet Kiara Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Harris.

Hi Kiara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
It started off as just an observation of another photographer while at church when I was about 11 or 12 years old. This observation soon turned into me taking a photography class in High School where I learned the basics of photography and even how to develop my own film. Not to give my age away but this was during the film era! It’s still a love of mine to this day.

I have always had an eye or joy for the artistic things in life so photography was truly just another artistic branch for me until it truly became its own blossoming tree in my life. I couldn’t imagine photography not being a part of my life now. It’s so much more than capturing an image for me. It’s freezing a moment in time that’s not replicable. That in my eyes is truly a priceless gift. One that I will always cherish.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth would indicate that there were no failures somewhere down the road and that wouldn’t be accurate of me to indicate. While I absolutely adore what I do in capturing moments and telling the story of those I capture, I think it’s safe to say it hasn’t always been the easiest. I would say my biggest struggle along the way has been learning to be confident in my own creative skin. As a creative whether you’re just starting out or are seasoned in your craft, we can sometimes get very comparative and wonder if what we are creating is “worthy” enough. But, not anymore. Create because you can…share because you can and be confident in it because it is worthy to be shared. End of story.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in visually telling someone’s story. Whether that’s a love story, a birth story, their family, or lifestyle story. The beauty of what I do and what I personally feel I have been known for is the art of being able to capture and tell someone’s story in a way that 100% reflects who THEY are. It’s a beautiful moment to hear from others that they love the moments that were captured because it reminds them of how beautiful they are.

The thing that sets me apart that I feel will forever be my answer is I’m honestly just an outlier. I edit based on how the session feels, so my looks aren’t always as “uniform” as everyone else and I’m completely okay with that. Most importantly I make it a point to get to really know my clients before their session. I love those moments. The beauty of growing with a client from their engagement to their wedding, to them having their first child is simply priceless.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
This is such an open-ended question. Contrary to others’ belief in answering it, here is what I will say, in 5-10 years I certainly do not see myself being where I am right now. We all have the ability to move in two directions in life. We either get better or we get worse…it’s hard to stay the same unless you’re just okay with being complacent. So, don’t limit yourself to a 5–10-year goal, you may in fact surpass that within a year…just move to become better, and better will keep coming. That’s my 5–10-year outlook.
