Meet Spencer Bland and Jordan Huggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Bland and Jordan Huggins of the Bop or Flop Podcast

Spencer and Jordan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Where to begin? Jordan and I were babies, we grew up, some stuff happened, and then we met in college. We’ve been the absolute best of friends ever since – performing alongside each other with standup comedy and just generally being inseparable.

If you don’t know, Bop or Flop Podcast is a music podcast where Jordan and I, and sometimes a guest, pick a date from history, we then go look at the Billboard Top Ten from that date and talk about if the songs hold up still today – aka do they “bop” or do they “flop”.

This all began back in April of 2020 (which feels like eight years ago now), we were on a trip and had this amazing idea to start a podcast. Both of us being comedians, naturally, we had already tried and failed at two separate podcast ideas, but this idea immediately felt different. It was something new that we hadn’t seen or heard before and from the get-go, we just knew it would be insanely fun to produce.

Skip forward a few months and we finally began recording and releasing episodes in December of 2020, we started with an original brand designed by me but after garnering a small, but mighty, audience who was clamoring for merch we decided to enlist the help of MRC and we launched our new brand in August of 2021.

Since we’re both comedians, our guests and the themes of the podcast center around comedy and the guests themselves are nationally touring comedians who Jordan and I have worked with before. We’ve had the likes of The Dollop’s Gareth Reynolds, Comedy Central, and Conan’s Shane Torres, Atlanta’s Lace Larrabee, and much much more. We release new episodes every Tuesday and have special episodes and producer’s cut versions of our episodes available on our Patreon as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
With any podcast, the biggest obstacle for us is definitely time. Jordan and I both got married this year and are trying to build out not only our personal careers but our comedy careers as well. Podcasting is a full-time job so a lot of our challenges focus around making sure we have the time to record, edit, and produce our podcast for our audience. We absolutely love doing this though, so even if it means staying up until 4 am some nights, we get it done.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We run Bop or Flop Podcast, which is a music podcast where Jordan and I, and sometimes a guest, pick a date from history, we then go look at the Billboard Top Ten from that date and talk about if the songs hold up still today – aka do they “bop” or do they “flop”.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Hosting and producing this podcast has brought us some of the happiest moments through laughter and the growth of our audience. A couple weeks ago a teacher in Washington state bought some stickers from our website (boporflop.com) and told us she uses them to reward her class when they play (a kid-friendly version) of Bop or Flop.

Hearing how much joy our dumb little podcast brings others truly makes us happy, we started Bop or Flop because we thought it would be fun – we never thought it would actually turn into something, but it seems like maybe it is!
