Rising Stars: Meet Marie Harrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Harrell.

Hi Marie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started off as a personal assistant, in 2016, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called SJS. It’s a weird feeling being bedridden in your 20s from there I made a promise to myself that if I ever got back healthy I would start designing while I was bedridden I started out running a small consignment business/customs in 2017, and in 2020, I made the leap into designing my own clothing.

TheMusesCloset is a luxury resort and leisurewear line, my designs are made to be functional but sexy, innovative, and sustainable. by purchasing quality material I’m able to create something that isn’t just beautiful but also good for the environment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road, I’m currently going through a legal process because there is a company represented by QVC that is trying to steal my name from me, I’ve been going through this since May of this year and it’s something that I am constantly fighting against.

I started my business in 2018 and I am a small start-up with no outside investors so it’s been very disheartening trying to resolve this issue but I keep my head up and I keep focus. Design is something very special to me in my eyes and gave me purpose and it’s something that I truly love.

That’s why every like, share, and interaction counts. I’m not very good at TikTok but I’ve started to use TikTok to promote my business and use my platform to tell people about what’s happening. But through it all, I had an amazing support system and the team behind me that help me create my vision for my business and my products.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
A lot of creators put aside the business aspect of running a business but I’ve learned that it’s just as important for me to be a businesswoman as it is for me to be your creative. I’m building a foundation for my business to drive so it may not be where I want it to be right at this moment but I’m doing everything in my power to set myself up for success.

The most challenging thing that I’ve faced as far as promoting my business is branding and marketing it takes just as much creative skill as it does business savvy to put out the perfect promotion and I’m still finding the right formula for my own business.

What makes you happy?
Overall, a want to get to a place where I have peace and financial security, and running my business that’s what would make me happy I feel like as business owners a lot of the time we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of maintaining a business and we forget ourselves in the process.

So I do things that help me maintain my peace so I can be the very best version of myself whenever I’m creating or handling operation tasks. I love doing yoga, going for walks, watching basketball, and having a cup of tea after a long day.
