Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha McLean.
Hi Marsha, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I became a single mother early in life and my son was my “why.” Why I needed to obtain my education and be financially able to support my family. Finally in 2010, I launched into entrepreneurship with my own private mental health practice. My private practice was not lucrative, but it taught me several valuable lessons that would enhance my future business.
In 2014, I was asked to speak at a women’s brunch to teach on mental health wellness. It was on that day of my first speaking engagement that I discovered I was born to speak. From that moment forward, I decided to pursue speaking as a career. My speaking opportunities have led me to have increased confidence and affirm that I can create the life I want. Today, I am a professional speaker specializing in mental health. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, National Speaker, TV Consultant, and Author.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Everyone’s road has challenges. I have dealt with obstacles, roadblocks, and setbacks. Not to mention, at times having to encourage myself while empowering others. I often struggled with not feeling qualified. I had devalued my expertise and skills. I had to train myself that I am enough, and my knowledge was sufficient. I had to stop being afraid and trust my own personal process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional speaker who specializes in mental health wellness! I bring expertise and knowledge of my field to others. I am known for applying a humorous approach to the complex topics of mental health and bringing clarity. What sets me apart? I am the “Professional Sista”! I am going to bring the encouragement and support you need. My approach is to assist with addressing self-defeating behaviors and negative thinking. I am most proud of the countless individuals I have touched through my speaking.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
My father was intrigued by the way I saw things a little different from others. Truthfully, I was inquisitive, and I wanted to know more. I always wanted to know the why and the how. That was the beginning of my love of seeking the root cause of a matter. I also took part in sports growing up. Participating in sports gave me the experience and knowledge of working with a team toward the same goals to achieve success.
