Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Phillip.
Hi Black, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been writing music since I was a very young man. I just didn’t have a passion for the business end of it. Or for anybody telling me anything other than I’m the best rapper they’ve ever heard. Terrible I know. Lol. It took family and friends pushing the issue around 2014 for me to really take a chance on putting it out there, honestly. I thank them every day.
Who knows what I would have been into otherwise. A couple shows in and it was pretty obvious we had something but still no real recognition or help. We, myself and B squared, just stuck to making music and doing the shows. That’s all that really made sense and what we wanted to do anyway.
I would say around 2016 we started feeling the love. Enough of it to keep fighting. Now I think we’re at a point where people here know. In fact, people who aren’t here know. So, I would say it was worth the work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not smooth but I will say it’s been fun. We kept the extra stuff out. Any fame or money that we reach or have reached is a bonus. We do it for the love of the craft man. The struggle in that can be beautiful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am your favorite rapper here’s favorite rapper. I specialize in writing. I’m known for having one of if not the strongest pens here. I’d do a versus with anyone who disagrees. lol. Call SWISS!!! Respectfully. My catalog sets me apart from the other rappers in my opinion.
I make lotta music some would say. Maybe even too much. I think when you sit down and go through everybody’s work at the end, I’ll have the larger catalog of actually dope music because I have no intention of stopping. It’s my therapy. People just happen to listen to it. Thank them too.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I procrastinate just like everybody else. I think I put out the impression that I always want to work. NO. Not at all. In fact, I set studio dates and times up to force myself to create on a schedule.
The key is to just keep booking. sometimes I’m up writing at 3 am because I have a studio session in the AM and nothing to record. That pressure has made some of my best work. Lol.
