Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Johnson.
Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always had a passion to help others and always wanted the best for others. There were some memorable moments in my adolescent years that sparked my passion and interest in wanting to go deeper in pursuing how to help others in their healing journey. I felt helpless as a teenager listening to others problems (trauma) and not being able to provide them with a solution or way to cope. I truly believe that I have been called into being a therapist and it has picked me ( I just choice to say “yes”). It seemed that everywhere I would go people would gravitate to me and share their story, expressing that talking to me seemed easy, and that there was a weight lifted, afterwards.
But I must say that getting to this point has been a process which was timely and not ideal as I would have seen it to be, starting from college. I completed my BA within 4 years and that was smooth, but it was the Master’s program that changed things for me. I am the proud mother of five fabulously gifted children, ages 4-11 (from my previous marriage), they have been a part of my journey and story literally and figuratively, lol. I was pregnant two times during my Masters program, working full time, and married. I walked across the stage, 6 months pregnant with my 2nd born. I made the choice to stay home with my children the first years of their lives, while trying to study for a Comp Exam, which took me a few times to complete before overcoming it. In this process, I had more children and it seemed the more children I had, the further away from my dream I seem to get. I was dealing with feelings of being unbecoming as a career woman, insignificance, a failure, incomplete, stuck and so many other things. I allowed fear to set into my mind which then affected my behaviors. I was allowing my circumstance to dictate who and what I was going to be.
I had a moment with God and pray for him to change the way I viewed/thought about myself and made up in my mind that I was not doing to stay in this place. I stated that in order for things to change I had to first shift my thinking and use my insecurities, struggles and past failures as a stepping stone for where I wanted to go. The moment I chose to change was when things started to happen, I was no longer looking from a lens of defeat or not enough, but from a place of “I will overcome this”, and “I will not allow this to stop me”. I always tell others that change happens when you make a choice, and put movement behind it.
I have been working in the field of mental health for 10+ years and have been providing therapy for 7 years. While I was in the field I was getting all the experience that I could get from others and absorbing information. I believe that a person should always be learning in any area of life, no matter the age. During the pandemic, I continued to work as the demand for mental health service increase, and through pray, God told me that it was time. I started my private practice in 2021, specializing in battered women, trauma, breaking generational cycles; working with adolescences, adults, and families. The name of my practice is Imprints by Jazz Counseling Services, which is redefining the imprints of the past and/or present into hope for a future. I believe that I am here to help others shift their minds about past experiences and not give the past power, but to use it as fuel for your future. Imprints by Jazz Counseling services is a place that will help to redefine, reshape, reignite the imprints of the past to press towards a positive hope for their future. I want to be able to make an impact on the lives of others so that can positively impact their families, communities and the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to getting here has not been smooth as I mentioned earlier but it has been enlightening. If I would not have shifted my mind, and put into practice what I want others to do, how would I know it works. I can say with confidence that I know what it is like to allow imprints to try to shape you but, I also know how it can be hope for a future which Imprints by Jazz is my future and others. I am learning every facet of running my business and knowing each role so that I am well aware of each function and well rounded. One of the struggles, I faced, was going through credentialing so that I can accept insurance, which is a waiting game. I have learn that slow and steady wins the race. I see that being anxious for nothing and in everything praying, things will always work out. The waiting game has produced endurance and refocusing within myself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
