Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamiya Ramsey.
Hi Tamiya, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
One of my fondest memories as a child was being with my mother in the kitchen. I grew up in a two-parent household, along with three other siblings. We would traditionally eat dinner together almost every night. On Sundays, my mom would cook up a big meal and a dessert, whether it be a cake or pie, maybe even some banana pudding. As time went on, I went from licking the spoon, to helping her mix in ingredients to making the desserts myself. It became something I looked forward to, seeing my family enjoy something I created. I think I was around 17 when I realized I wanted to be a baker. In High School, I had a home economics teacher, her name was Mrs. Bachman. In this class, she allowed me to tap into my creative side, and do things outside traditional desserts. When I was 21, I decided to take Baking and Pastry Arts classes. I was able to make things I could have never imagined. I made chocolate sculptures and swan puffy pastries, all types of beautiful desserts. I also learned skills like how to make American buttercream versus swiss meringue buttercream. I utilized the knowledge I learned from my classes and established Tammy Cakes. I am currently a home baker who specializes in cakes, cupcakes, chocolate-dipped treats, and many other different desserts. Although I do not have the bakery-cafe I always dreamt of just yet. I work daily towards it. As I build up my clientele, they always push me to create new things and try new trends. The feeling of making something beautiful for a client’s event and them being overjoyed by the final product is euphoric. On this path of trying to perfect my craft and continue to build my business, this year I was able to participate in my first pop-up shop, this was an amazing achievement for me, I was able to introduce new people to Tammy Cakes and broaden my clientele. I am grateful for all those who have supported me and inspired me. I look forward to my journey with Tammy Cakes and being able to continue with my plans on opening a Bakery in the near future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most things in life are not going to be a smooth road. You go through ups and downs but with that comes growth. In my experience that is what matters especially in Entrepreneurship. I grew up in Brentwood, New York, I moved to Raleigh when I was 21. Knowing just family I knew it would be difficult to build a clientele. Fortunately for me, social media was there to help. Through Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter I was able to reach people I may have never come across who ended up being returning clients, and even friends. As time went on, I was able to use social media to keep clients coming back by running specials on my treats. Posting pictures of my desserts on social media platforms also allowed me to showcase my talents and receive positive feedback on my work. I also participated in a pop-up event that allowed me to meet new people and spread the word about my business. Also having to work a full-time job and building a business at the same time has been a struggle, just like most entrepreneurs, I have to use my own finances to supply my business. This requires very late nights and early mornings. Things I’ve actually learned to enjoy over time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’d like to think that I don’t specialize in just one thing when it comes to Tammy Cakes. I make many different things from cakes to chocolate-dipped strawberries to cheesecake bars. I even make alcohol-infused treats. My swiss meringue buttercream is definitely what sets me apart from any others in the game, it’s a game-changer. I always recommend it for my clients who tend to think regular buttercream is too sweet.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My clients being happy and satisfied with their product is everything for me. That is why I do what I do. Sweets bring a certain joy to people and I love being a part of that process.
