Inspiring Conversations with Marissa Davis of Reign Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Davis.

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started long before I realized it would be part of my journey. I have always had a love for makeup and all things beauty. I remember always volunteering to do everyone’s makeup for prom and even long after high school for weddings and special events.

But at an early age, I convinced myself that “playing with makeup” wasn’t a real career and instead I found myself working in jobs that never made me feel fulfilled. I always struggled to find happiness in working for other people. In 2018, 7 years after high school, I knew I needed something different. So, while working my 8-5 job. I registered for a 9-month course to get my esthetics license. Once I graduated, I stayed at my full-time job for another 9 months before taking a full-time position as a makeup artist with a bridal team.

It did not take long for me to know I was finally doing something I truly loved. I loved the ability to make my own schedule. I loved making people feel beautiful and talking with fellow artists about hair and makeup. I loved that I was waking up every morning and HAPPY to go to work! After 2 years of working under another team, I was ready to branch out on my own. So, on January 1st, 2021, Reign Beauty was born!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As a first-year business owner, I was prepared for some bumps along the way. I knew starting my company at the height of COVID would be a challenge on its own. Also, getting into an industry that could be highly stressful was a concern as well. I definitely questioned my ability to lead and whether this was something I could handle.

From managing over 150 contracts to growing our team from 12 to 24 artists there have been plenty of obstacles along the way. But without challenges, there is no growth and so far taking this leap of faith is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I would say I was an equal mix of tomboy and girly-girl. I loved creating and designing things; from rearranging my room, monthly, to staging small dance productions in my backyard.

But I also loved playing video games and running around outside with my brothers. I remember wanting to be all the things, a fashion designer, a teacher… a forensic psychologist (my love for true crime started young), and more.
