Inspiring Conversations with Yandry Mastromihalis of Your money, Your home Financial Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yandry Mastromihalis.

Hi Yandry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I was born in the Dominican Republic, raised in New York, and now settled in North Carolina (NC). I’m happily married and have two beautiful kids. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from William Peace University. I’m also a licensed real estate agent in NC and now a business owner.

I’ve spent the past few years working in the affordable housing industry helping individuals, couples, and families manage their money and become homeowners. In 2018, I made the decision to leave a toxic work environment, and that decision brought to light how poorly my husband and I were managing our family finances.

We were living what is considered a “normal” life, living paycheck to paycheck while carrying a huge amount of consumer debt. We had enough money to cover the bills but anything extra was put on the credit cards.

Once our income changed, we realized we were on the verge of financial ruin and needed to make some drastic changes to improve our finances. I started searching the internet and reading anything I could find on personal finance. The first thing that was clear to me was that we needed to get out of debt. This required a mindset shift on how we managed our money and a good look at the behaviors that got us into debt in the first place.

We decided to attack our debt with all we had, we made budget cuts, sold stuff, and ultimately, decided to sell our home. Selling our home allowed us to tackle a big portion of our debt including a car note, a personal loan, and credit cards. Cutting our spending included saying “NO” to many things such as eating out, family vacations, and the latest trends. In addition, we started looking at ways to increase our income.

For instance, given my husband had been an underpaid teacher he decided to pivett into a new field that had opportunity for growth. Meanwhile, I took a contractor position that gave me the flexibility to search for my next employer and increase my income as well. All these changes were the groundwork for a new foundation. Since then, we have paid off $40k in consumer debt, bought three homes, live well beyond our means, and can finally stop stressing about money!

Now I help others build wealth through homeownership and taking control of their money!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road and there have been many bumps along the way. But the biggest challenge for me has been juggling being a mom, wife, employee and now a new business owner.  It’s not easy to find a balance between family and career and giving back to your community. I’ve learned to stop striving for perfection (done is better than perfect) and taking things one step at a time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My mission at Your Money, Your Home is to empower and support my clients with financial education, tools, and coaching to make homeownership a reality.  Given its complexity I created an online course to help clients prepare to qualify for a mortgage. I also offer 1-1 coaching to help my clients with budgeting, increasing credit score, saving for a down payment, lowering debt to income ratio, and setting them on the path to becoming mortgage-ready!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?

First and foremost, my relationship with God. He’s never abandoned me; even in my worst moments, I’ve seen his hand in my life. Secondly, my family, they are the reason I always push forward. I couldn’t do what I do without their love and support. Lastly, As a Latina in the real estate industry it is important for me to serve as a resource-role model in my community.
