Meet Joseph Cuccurullo & Samara Cuccurullo of Resource Room Learning Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Cuccurullo and Samara Cuccurullo.

Joseph, Samara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We founded Resource Room Learning Center in 2015 in Staten Island, NY. I (Joseph) and Samara met working together as NYC Public School teachers at a high school in Manhattan.

We saw the need to create a Learning Center that would offer a different type of service from the “big chain” tutoring Centers and to provide a more comprehensive learning experience for students from grades K-12. We wanted to not only provide quality academic instruction but also, offer a wide range of educational activities like STEM Programs, including Robotics and Coding. We moved to Holly Springs, NC in 2020 and opened our Holly Springs location in October 2021.

We are career educators and we are focused on making sure students have the foundational skills academic skills they need.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When we opened our first location in 2015 it was a small 500 square foot room. We grew to three locations on Staten Island within 5 years; however, when Covid-19 hit, like so many businesses, we were severely impacted since schools were mostly remote.

We made the very difficult decision to close two of our locations and focus on one location in Staten Island. After some reflection, we decided to leave New York and start another Center in NC: our new home. Today, we are starting our North Carolina location the same way we began our first location in 2015.

My wife and I work side by side, providing all of the instruction, building a client base, and starting to hire amazing support staff. With enough time, and the support of our community we are looking forward to rebuilding our business with a focus on our clients and their academic needs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has played a role in our business, and for that we are grateful. We have been lucky to have a dedicated client base and also a wonderful staff that has not only worked alongside us for years but has done so through the difficulty of the pandemic.

Our luck has been the quality of the people that have helped us grow and helped sustain us through the difficult times.
