Today we’d like to introduce you to Denny and Shannon Medlin.
Hi Denny and Shannon, can you start by introducing yourselves? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We live in Clayton, NC, located immediately east of Raleigh. We began our Spell It Out Co business by becoming a licensee of Spell It Out Co LLC in February 2020. We were the first-yard sign company in our county and have enjoyed serving the people in Johnston and Wake Counties, NC, and other surrounding areas.
This business was unique and we knew it was a great opportunity because big yard displays were not prevalent here at the time. In a short amount of time, our business became successful. In July 2021, the opportunity presented itself to purchase the LLC that sold us our franchise. We joined our friends that own Spell It Out Cabarrus in a venture to become the acting owners of Spell It Out CO LLC which currently has 35 licensees nationwide including licensees from California, Minnesota, Texas, the northeast, and of course now here with us in the south.
We are eager to continue expansion and are always looking to sign new licensees throughout the country. We do remain equally busy tending to our original business serving our area as Spell It Out Co NC. Our busiest times are always graduation months when we have lots of demand for graduations at a time when weddings and anniversaries are also popular, and people are always having birthdays.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When we began, we struggled to keep up with the demand due to a lack of inventory.
Some of the improvements we have made since taking over the LLC eliminated some of our early issues. One of the biggest investments was hiring Clayton Web Design to develop a new website for our entire company. We also automated the ordering process for the other licensees.
We then hired a graphic designer to create graphics that are unique to Spell It Out Co LLC.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We have two adult sons and a new daughter-in-law, Mason, Dawson, and Brooklynn.
Denny has coached men’s varsity basketball for 28 years in NC and retired from coaching at Clayton High School at the end of the 2021 season. Shannon works for a non-profit and has been employed there for 24 years. Having lived in the town of Clayton for many years and raising a family that has been involved in the school system allowed us to develop relationships which proved advantageous when we began trying to market our business in the area.
Many local businesses with established social media presences were willing to help us get our name out there.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
We have worked very hard. We do not turn people away and try our best to please every customer. In the beginning, we seemed to be out every night until late working on the displays.
As we have built our inventory and have become more efficient, we are able to optimize our time a little better. The qualities of ‘hard work’ and also the drive to be the best have pushed us to make this business a blessing and a success for us.

We have seen many wonderful displays they have put up since they started this venture. We have seen them work in all kinds of weather. They aim at pleasing each and every customer. One child asked her mom “how did they know what I liked” since they had chosen just the right things of what the child liked.
