Community Highlights: Meet Carly & Nick Brango of Funguys Brewing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly & Nick Brango. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Nick was a homebrewer in college (with Carly’s help), and he loved craft beer so much he wanted a job in the industry. After managing a taproom in Pittsburgh post-college, Nick wanted to get an education on the production side of craft beer.

He took a course through the American Craft Brewers Guild, and after much consideration decided to open a brewery of his own. Nick and Carly opened doors at Funguys Brewing in 2018, and have since both had hands-on all-day to day production/management.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Becoming a part of the local craft beer scene was challenging when there were so many existing breweries.

Making a name for ourselves has been most important; we rebranded the logo and design in early 2020, brewed trendy beers, and put more cans and drafts in local shops for exposure. In a warehouse setting, always have some sort of malfunctioning or breaking down of equipment. Learning about all the machinery has been important to repair things fixed before it affects production.

Also having Covid affecting us 2 out of the 4 years we’ve been open was a challenge. We pivoted business plans several times to accommodate the effects of the pandemic.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a mom and pop ran business. Nick and Carly combined for many years have worked just about every role in the company.

We have established a brand around flavor-forward ales and lagers, specializing in hoppy, malty, fruited beers, and many more.
Our most popular beers are hazy IPAs (sessions, singles, doubles, triples), stouts, and smoothie style sours (heavily fruited sour beer)

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Both Nick and Carly work in management and production, but Carly has taken over lead brewing when Nick had knee surgery 2 years ago. Nick continues to be our jack of all trades- writing every recipe, creating unique beers and new concepts.
