Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Maples.
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up in Raleigh, I spent a lot of time in nature.
My parents were so young when they had my older sister and me that it felt like I spent the most time either alone in the woods or with my grandparents. Very early on I got to see the dichotomy of my more “spiritually-free” inclined parents and my super religious grandparents, as well as having my own personal supernatural experiences that no one seemed to believe or give a convincing enough explanation. This bred a deeply spiritual curiosity— and a wariness— that has helped bring me to the point I am now.
After enough unexplainable experiences, I began to dig into the occult (secretly) very early on; I remember sneaking books about palmistry, numerology, and astrology through the library’s checkout when my Grandmother wasn’t looking. The more I was restricted from this calling, the more it made me hunger for it.
As a kid, who could see passed-over people and fairies, and experienced intense astral projections, I sure had a lot of learning and healing to do. I used to be afraid of the things I saw and didn’t have the correct resources to understand my experiences, so it was quite hard at times to hold this belief in myself. I felt so confused about everything, so I ignored that part of myself in hopes it would just fade away with my youth. But I also found this little flicker of hope and curiosity inside that never let me truly step away from exploring that huge part of my soul.
I started professionally reading tarot cards online in 2016, and slowly started to expand my services, gaining confidence through solid mentors, classes, and life experience. My true passion is Shamanism and helping people find their life’s purpose, and I always aim to draw in people who are ready and willing to believe in themselves, no matter what. I wholly believe that we all are innately intuitive beings, and true happiness can be found chasing your truth even when it’s hard.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Growth is hard and can be ugly. What I do requires me to constantly check myself and continue searching for the spiritual in everything I do, but there is also a fine balance to that as well.
Staying highly intuitive and highly logical can be a tightrope to walk, and I have been blessed with elders in my community whom I can rely on whenever I may need some guidance. I just remember being so discouraged by everyone in my family from pursuing this knowledge— it really stirred up a lot of issues involving self-confidence and trust. I can be thankful for this now looking back, but I saw some really dark days and sometimes still struggle with these issues.
Learning and teaching this balance is an art form because not everyone is going to come to you on the same wavelength as well. Embracing the space between gentle and firm way showing has also been a struggle, that I’m sure many other people can relate with.
This was another challenge for me, especially starting this journey professionally at 21, with no background in teaching or any support from pretty much everyone. I have had my work cut out for me, and I have come to really enjoy this process of healing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a local psychic-medium, known mainly for my tarot reading and mediumship abilities. I am so proud that I have accomplished so much so young, and am so excited about my future and impact on this community.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My highest hope is to grow and encourage different strengths within our community – of all shapes and sizes – to shape both Raleigh and the local spiritual community into a healthy and thriving environment. Everyone deserves to express themself in a healthy way, and I hope to shape however that may look with however many people it may take.
