Conversations with Brianna Hinton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Hinton.

Hi Brianna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been known for being smart.

My favorite class in elementary school was writing. In high school, it was sports medicine. I decided that I wanted to become a doctor. Medical school admissions are super competitive and expensive. I was in an unhealthy relationship and feeling like I had nowhere to turn, I picked up a pen and started writing. I had written before but never did anything with it.

I wanted to see what my rhymes sounded like with an instrumental behind me. I fell in love with the release that comes with writing a song. I can find instrumentals to fit any mood or style I want. At first, I was nervous. I knew I was known for being smart and didn’t know how people would take me going from wanting to be a doctor to a rapper.

Impulsively, I decided to post a cover to Drake’s “Nice 4 What” and I got so much love- from old high school friends to people I had met while at UNC-Chapel Hill. After that, I started to get collab opportunities, follows, and likes from people in the hip hop/rap community in not only Raleigh but all over the country. I’ve been with my fiancè for three years now and his love of photography rubbed off on me.

I ended up buying my own camera and trying to help him as much as I can with Prolific Photography. I’m so fortunate to have been able to meet some amazing, talented artists on my journey and I’m so excited because it’s only the beginning!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road.

I don’t think I would have wanted it to be, either. I have learned so much about myself. It was hard believing in myself at first. I used to be so afraid of failure because I wasn’t used to it. I always played it safe. How in the hell was I going to become a rapper?

I had no connections, no equipment, and I had no idea how expensive it would be as an independent artist. Pushing your own tracks, getting your own shows, shooting music videos, and having photography shoots… it is a lot.

Another struggle was professionalism. I work in healthcare, my mother sings in a gospel group and my dad has a corporate job. What if a patient or one of my parents’ peers were to find my profile? If it’s private, I won’t have nearly as much engagement as I would if it were public!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist and photographer.

I am known for what I do to a mic and the way I can erupt a studio with my flow. I’m also a silent assassin with a camera. I am most proud of working toward my dream of waking up and being surrounded by music and freedom. What sets me apart from others?

I write all of my bars and I don’t have to sexualize them for people to listen.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
