Today we’d like to introduce you to Deyouna Hawthorne.
Deyouna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started cosmetology school when I was in the 11th grade. Graduated in 2009. From there, I went straight to a salon with no clientele, a big mistake. I was fresh out of school with no clientele so I got very discouraged and left the hair care business behind for a while.
I’ve always done hair as a side hustle with no desire to return to a salon, until 2014, when I had my first child (son). From there, it was up! I started slowly building my clientele until I came back full-time in a shop in 2017.
I’ve had 2 salon suites since then and my brand and clientele have grown tremendously. I have my own hair care line with my top-selling hair growth oil. My brand is growing and I’m looking forward to releasing more products soon!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not!
From learning to build my clientele, patience, and just the fear of failing, I’ve had to overcome a lot. At one point, I even allowed my license to lapse but I went back and reinstated them in 2017.
Having two children definitely gave me the push and motivation I needed to never give up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed cosmetologist.
I specialize in microlinks, color, natural hair, and locs. I’m definitely known for my color skills. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come and my brand. I hold my business to a high standard.
My main thing is to take care of my client’s hair needs. Healthy hair is always key. Others see that as well which is why so many people have blessed me with their business.
What’s next?
My plans for the future would be to see my hair care line nationwide! Also, moving to another city.
