Check Out Destiny Pritchett’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Pritchett.

Hi Destiny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
At a very young age, like most of us singers, I began singing in church. Born into a family that was fully invested in ministry and music. When my parents opened a church of their own, I immediately began what I like to call the real background singer prep. Taught by my mom, Nicole Pritchett, I learned how to properly breathe along with breathing techniques, were to sing “from”, and eventually how to lead a song of my own.

Because I am a Florida girl, when I moved to North Carolina my senior year, things FELT different. In both good and bad ways. Finding a church to connect with first, was most important to me because I’ve found there is a community in the church and at the time it was what I needed most. While I had visited many churches here in North Carolina, World Overcomers youth ministry L1FE is where I met my first NC family.

Quickly joining their youth praise team and soon leading worship on the team I had found my way to the main church’s stage as a background vocalist. From there, I made amazing connections and even better, more people who became family. Not long after, I discovered open mics.

The first I had ever gone to was hosted by an amazing local artist by the name of DL ZENE, Or maybe some of you know her as Dottie. From there, while my gospel BGV life was on the go, being discovered by Host Krystal Damuse my life as an R&B background singer, had just begun.

Not long after, I found myself staying in Renton, Washington for a few months. There I met my amazing producer Austin Giavanni along with his amazing wife and family. They had been the first to not only ask did I, myself, a background vocalist, write, but also if I wanted to record something of my own. Right then and right there. Because I’m always writing, pulling out a song or two or even three, on the spot, was easy.

Little did people know, although I love singing, being able to write a song and translate different feelings onto a piece of paper to a beat or an instrument, well that in fact is what I LIVE FOR. And there it was. With the help of my family and my producer and their family, who I call family, came my very first EP, “In Your Feelings”, created in less than a month.

Now, as I am back in North Carolina I have the pleasure of singing with a band by the name of Niito and another by the name of Moodswing. Church, is my roots. God is whom I will always serve so that never goes away for me. My dream is to break the box. To be able to tell my story the way I want, through any genre of music.

To be seen just as much as God-fearing but also just as much as a real person, with faults, and a person who goes through life just like you. I understand my position as a leader in both worlds. I only hope to inspire and “Get it right”. Either way, I am grateful and so humbled by all that my journey has yet to expose me to.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Is any journey ever smooth? Haha. I believe one of my first obstacles was learning how to juggle my schedule. I had to learn that sleep is something I soon would also need to schedule. Another had and maybe still is a struggle, is being both a worship leader and a singer who sings outside of the gospel genre.

My parents didn’t approve of some of the locations I had been requested to sing at and although they support and want absolutely nothing but the best for me, It was hard trying to explain why I’m choosing the route that I am. Finally, I’d say, my biggest obstacle was me.

Because I had only done background vocals, being in the forefront, AGAIN, scared the life out of me. Doubting myself and at times not believing in all of who I KNOW myself to be was some of the hardest moments to work through.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently a building substitute at Jefferey Grove Elementary. I absolutely adore my job and the students here.

I believe the best part of my job is the amount of relationships and connections I get to build in little to no time. The idea that I can be the teacher who stopped to listen or who made their day or the young black female that my young black princess’ can look up to as a good example brings me so much joy.

I am most proud of the positive attitude that I bring every day. I believe what sets me apart from others, is just that. I don’t panic. I don’t freak out. I let life do what life does and roll with it.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Maybe the most interesting lesson that Covid-19 has taught me… Are we as a nation, very dirty, to begin with? I am glad most of us wash our hands more often.
