Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Spencer.
Hi Marcia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for sewing and designing since I was very young. I learned from my mother and sewed off and on up through college.
It wasn’t until after I had my first child that I started to think about starting my our business and using my skills for something other than a hobby. I started with children’s clothing and sold it online and in local shops for a while.
I soon started to get requests for women’s fashion and In 2014 I branched off and started creating women’s handbags. This is when Keechii Bags was born. Keechii Bags took off pretty well and I started selling them in local boutiques, trade shows, and online. After my third child was born in 2018, I had to shift my focus.
I didn’t have time to produce as much as I did before. So I started doing custom orders and shifting my energy into trying to build Keechii Bags into something more than just Handbags. With the onset and growth of social media, I started to share my work and skill of creating more over the past couple of years and have made connections with other creatives.
This has opened up the doors to so many opportunities in fashion, design, and digital content creating in my niche and has grown to what it is today. I am still growing as an entrepreneur and look forward to increasing my platform and opening more doors for opportunities in fashion, design, styling, and social media content creation.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think setting off on your own to start a business always has its bumps, especially if you don’t have a sound plan. When I first started I knew what I wanted to do but didn’t quite have a devised plan so there was plenty of struggle and figuring things out on my own.
I’ve learned a lot since I first started, however, and I still continue to learn as things are forever changing. And now with Social media as a main part of the business, it seems I learn something new every day. I think my biggest struggle comes with trying to do everything mostly on my own.
I am creative naturally, so I never struggled much with the creative part but making sure you have your T’s crossed and i’s dotted on the entrepreneur side is a job in itself. There will always be challenges and bumps but how you get over them and keep climbing and growing is the biggest part.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a designer, stylist, sewist, and entrepreneur but I’m probably best known for my DIY Fashion and Style on Social Media. I am most proud of the platform that I’ve created through my craft.
Being able to inspire others to create and express themselves through style and fashion is a gratifying feeling. I love inspiring others to create the looks they desire, that make them feel confident, whether it be from DIY or styling Ready-to-wear fashion.
I like to be able to show individuals that they can achieve their goals and express themselves through fashion at any price point and/or size, and create anything they imagine.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Mimi G Style has inspired me a lot.
She has achieved a great deal in this niche and I have listened to her podcast Business Shet several times. She offers a lot of knowledge about a creative starting business and pressing through obstacles.
I also think there is a lot of knowledge dropped on Youtube and online generally that I’ve stumbled upon, no specific names but there is plenty of information and guidance on social media these days.
