Today we’d like to introduce you to Maura Surles.
Hi Maura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Back in 2015, I graduated from North Carolina Central University with a bachelor’s degree in Public Health education. During my time at NCCU, I also raised my son London Surles. So being a single parent and going to school, while working part-time jobs, I also needed a “side hustle”, to make ends meet!
So I started doing my hair. I taught myself mostly everything about hair, such as sew-ins, lace fronts, wig construction (hand sewn), crochet protective styles, bonding hair extensions, silk press, etc. I actually built my clientele by doing my own hair as well! After about 6-7 years of being a kitchen stylish as they would call it, I finally went to cosmetology school at Vance-Granville Community College in Creedmoor NC.
While In hair school, I launched my brand, “She by Maura Sherese” and, my hair collection.” She by Maura Sherese hair collection”, selling grade 10A Raw Indian hair extensions, closures, frontal, and wig units (machine made by me). I graduated from the Vance-Granville cosmetology department in May 2021 and landed my first job as a professional hairstylist at Stylz Unlimited hair salon located in Durham, NC in August 2021.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s never easy getting to where you want to be in life.
On my path, there were a lot of lessons learned and a lot of obstacles failed!! Before I started doing hair full time I was working with temp agencies at a couple of call centers, I have been in the health care field working in plasma and in dialysis working as a patient care tech.
I had a lab assistant position at NIEHS and within that time frame, I had been through an eviction, staying with friends, and a car repossession! However, it didn’t stop me from where I wanted to be it actually pushed me a little harder.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am a licensed hairstylist and I work at Stylz Unlimited hair salon in Durham, NC.
I specialize in making wig units, and protective hairstyling such as basic natural sew-ins, crochet hairstyles, bonding hair extensions, coloring hair, healthy hair treatments, and natural hairstyling!! I am most proud of myself of course and my brand “She by Maura Sherese”.
And my hair collection!! What also sets me apart from others is my professionalism, my kindness, and my concern for my client’s hair. No matter what style healthy hair comes first!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The crisis affected me the most when we were order to stay inside because that’s when “She by maura Sherese” was founded!! Therefore, the crisis affected me in a positive way, and the most important lesson is to always wear your mask and follow all sanitation/disinfection guidelines when working in a business setting to keep me and the client safe!
