Daily Inspiration: Meet Milhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milhouse.

Hi Milhouse, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story kind of begins in college at Hampton University. While attending, I wasn’t an official DJ but I did “DJ” house parties from an iPhone and my Macbook with a speaker. People always said I should be a DJ but I never really took it seriously until a few years later.

That’s when I met DJ mOma through his brother Bas (who I went to Hampton with) attending Everyday Ppl day parties. I saw what mOma was able to do to a crowd while DJ’ing and I decided that I wanted to learn. I ended up reaching out to him and he was able to teach me the basics.

From there, I went home, bought equipment, and began practicing. I would DJ little gatherings for my friends for practice until I eventually was good enough to DJ for others. Fast forward to today, I just DJ’ed at Dreamville Fest on the everyday people stage with mOma and a bunch of other talented DJs from all over.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, it was rough because you have to learn what works and what doesn’t work.

Paying attention to your crowd, learning to transition from song to song properly, getting on the mic and being an MC, and learning what parts of songs make the crowd go. So many things to learn. That feeling you get when you don’t do a good job at a gig, you never forget it. I use it as motivation. Never want to feel that again.

Also, there are so many DJs in NYC, that you have to be able to separate yourself in order to stay consistently booked and get the best gigs. You have to stay hungry, practice, and stay up to date with all the music that is constantly dropping. Being complacent will get you nowhere quick.

Lastly, COVID was a huge obstacle. I basically couldn’t DJ for over a year which put a halt to the momentum, I had to go into the year.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a DJ and also a sneaker enthusiast.

Music-wise I’m pretty open format however I specialize in Hip-Hop and R&B, 90s-current. I also play Afrobeats, Reggae, some pop (top 4o), and some Latin music. the 90s/2000s is my favorite era.

Sneaker-wise, I’ve DJied events with Nike, Footlocker, and Jordan to name a few brands. I’ve also done a few photoshoots/some modeling for the brands mentioned. I’ve been into sneakers since I was a kid and it’s probably something I’ll be into forever.

I’m fascinated by the designs, colorways, and sometimes even the story behind the sneaker.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
