Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Jenkins.
Hi Evan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
After singing everywhere I walked when I was a toddler, I began learning blues piano from my grandfather around 8. I grew up on Ray Charles, the Beatles & Steely Dan. All influenced my writing, production, and sound, most importantly, feeling. Writing great stories but delivering them was just as important, if not more. I graduated from music school and moved to Nashville with a recording project. That turned into me wanting to live permanently in Nashville and begin my artist career! For about 4 years now, I’ve been writing, recording, gigging, and trying to land some decent management & publishing. I most recently recreated a website, designed a logo & merch, wrote new music, and recorded an EP set to be released in June of this year! Moving forward with purpose and living happy are my goals every day!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No. Maybe if Mom & Dad paid for everything like many musicians I know in the game it would be smooth (lol). But it hasn’t been. There is always someone with a bigger problem than me, but it hasn’t always been a success since I chose this path 20 years ago. Basic answers such as the typical struggles of an ordinary person going through college, meeting new people, creating good impressions & developing a work ethic in a musical context were all challenges!
But the trial and error of this lifestyle can be a better answer. The dedication, flexibility, long-term planning, straight up failing, fundraising, networking, running a business alone, always needing to be available, the ever need to practice and musically better yourself. All that said, it’s worth it once you’ve completed something. Once you’ve performed it on stage. Once you’ve personally gotten what you need from it and it’s now out there for anyone and everyone to own themselves! It never stops.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Artist/Songwriter – I write and perform what is now called Retro/Pop music. An original modern style with a nostalgic aftertaste. It caters to the 1960s & 1970s, although it is also in line with today’s music such as Lawrence, Vulfpeck, Leon Bridges, Allen Stone, etc.
I am most known for my songs and stage energy. With my ability to play & sing with the energy I can bring, most shows have people dancing and catching lightning in a bottle – I’m an artist who can play, tell a story and give real entertainment that we miss from a generation ago. The music is soulfully cool, familiar yet confidently original. I’ve discovered this writing and music are indeed being sought after by my age because of their authenticity. I’m grateful to be a part of this movement and hope I can offer something to it!
What makes you happy?
Funny movies. Well-written Comedy. From Mel Brooks to Seth Rogan. From Monty Python to Judd Apatow. From SNL to Seinfeld. If not that, then learning history, cooking fabulous meals, being outside, but like playing in the dirt and walking in the woods to a strange pond kind of being outside.
I guess I should say music too 😉
