Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashton Smith.
Hi Ashton, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Back in 2017, I was recently out of college (I graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration), working as an office assistant. I found myself scrolling through lifestyle blogs in my spare time and craving a more spacious lifestyle where I could work from home with my husband and travel the world whenever and wherever I wanted.
This was the initial moment that led me to become an entrepreneur. I started with a simple lifestyle blog – much like the blogs I was consuming at the time – blending my love of writing and empowering women. This allowed me to create some great connections in the online space, but I knew I wanted more. I wanted to do a business, honestly.
So, I expanded our blog platform, and we became a quarterly magazine called The Authentic Woman. This was designed to feature women’s raw, honest stories to empower others to know that they are not alone and worthy as they are. At this point, the company was more of a hobby than a business. So, even though we continued to grow our audience and community overall, I still knew I wanted more. More impact. More reach. More revenue to support the growth of the company. So, we pivoted again.
This was when The Awakening was born (our current brand). We started with our online membership dedicated to helping women achieve CEO Mastery so they can amplify their results in their business in the form of impact in their community and cash flow for the business. This was the starting point, and we’ve only continued to grow.
Today, The Awakening is a platform dedicated to helping women in business build intentionally so they can leave a powerful legacy behind. We do this through inspiration, education, and mentorship. And we have the opportunity to serve women all around the globe, from the Philippines and Switzerland to Israel and London. It wasn’t a quick or linear process to get here. But I’m forever grateful to my past self for staying the course, taking the small steps, and remaining focused. Because we’re truly living in the fruition of all that I once dreamed of, I aim to help others in our community do the same.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
One of the things our company is known for is our raw, real, vulnerable shares about our process. We love to showcase the true journey of what it took to get to where we are – having that perspective is everything. That said, we’ve gone through many ups and downs to reach this point. One of which changed the trajectory of our business forever.
In 2019, when I was finally ready to transition from a hobbyist to a true CEO and leader, I decided to invest in propelling our growth. We invested $20,000 into an ads and funnels expert with the promise to make our money back. Well, plot twist: we made $0, sending us into a mess of debt and a lot of questioning.
But this moment taught me to take OWNERSHIP of this business and lead it forward in a powerful way. This shift changed this business forever and has allowed us to serve others in growing and scaling their business with a simplistic but powerful approach.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have the blessing of coming from a family of entrepreneurs. I thank every one of them for paving the way so I could follow in their footsteps. My greatest inspiration has always been my parents. Their belief, empowerment, and support had helped me maintain stamina and stay the course when I questioned everything. There’s no way this company would be where it is without our Creative Director and Executive Assistant – who also happens to be my sister. Her vision, creativity, and innovation have allowed us to break the molds set before us and serve with excellence.
