Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Fagan.
Hi Nikki, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started my career as a Graphic Designer 20 years ago, where I would help businesses right at the beginning of their brand development journey with their corporate identity. I moved into brand development a few years later, where I would manage corporate brands overall after a few stints as a Creative Director in Bermuda and Jamaica.
In 2015, I cofounded The Brand Lion as a full-service marketing and PR firm. After the pandemic, I refined my services to support entrepreneurs more directly as I held their hands and provided advice and accountability. At the same time, they built their businesses via one-to-one services and a group incubator.
I also support the small business organization in Bermuda as their Incubator lead.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggle one: Balancing a new baby and managing a new business with employees.
Struggle two: Signing big business as a new advertising agency
Struggle three: Understanding the fundamentals of business – after all – I was a Designer, and I didn’t come with a business background
Struggle four: Knowing when to let go and pivot
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Brand Lion is Bermuda’s first award-winning, full-service women-led, black-owned advertising and Public Relations firm, and being number one is a proud moment. Still, the proudest moment is that over six years, we hired over seven interns and have served as industry mentors for numerous more, and they were all paid positions.
We specialize in Brand growth and reputation management. Our shining moments have been too numerous to mention, from helping the Bermuda government launch its international Fintech initiative and leading the marketing efforts for one of Bermuda’s largest security providers and employers to ending our full-service offering by designing the City of Hamilton’s food festival. What has set us apart is that we don’t sell things they don’t need, and we choose clients we can get behind. We tell real stories about our clients and ourselves, and people thankfully seem to resonate with that, which is pretty cool.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Brand management is becoming less choreographed and more spontaneous in appearance fading are the days of polished annual reports, business cards, and a perfect reputation. People want to know the details behind the brands they interact with and buy from, and they are more likely to sense and disconnect when a brand is being disingenuous. Content is less polished, and that will continue as a trend as the metaverse continues to shape our reality. Audio apps made an appearance during the pandemic and are reshaping what brand ambassadorship can look like.
