Hidden Gems: Meet Abianna Roman of Abi Roman Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abianna Roman.

Hi Abianna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I entered the fitness industry in August 2014 when I competed in my first bikini fitness show in Toronto. I had just finished my post-grad program and was working as a server at Joey’s. A regular patron was in and told me I should enter a fitness competition because of my athletic physique from riding horses for so many years, so I decided to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a bikini competition. I placed 2nd at my first show and won the female best abs award.

After this show, I was hooked. I enrolled in personal training programs to get certified and nutrition courses because I was so interested in learning more. At this time, I was still competing in the equestrian sport of 3 Day Eventing. I soon transitioned from riding horses into bodybuilding and fitness. I am now a fully certified personal trainer and fitness nutrition specialist. My academic accreditations include an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto and a High Honours Graduate Certificate for Sports and Event Marketing at Seneca College. I competed in 13 bikini bodybuilding shows from August 2014 until October 2017 all around North America. My most prestigious placings are winning the 2016 Canadian Bikini Bodybuilding Championship in New Brunswick and placing 5th at the Arnold Amateur Classic in Ohio. 10 out of 13 shows were top 5 finishes.

Competing opened up so many doors for me and is what inspired me to want to help individuals to look and feel their best. I have been training clients for seven years, and officially started working for myself full-time at the end of 2017. Launching Abi Roman Fitness was extremely exciting as I always dreamed of starting my own business. With my bodybuilding background and fitness certifications, I have refined my fitness strategy to provide my clients the best results, but more importantly, to do so in a healthy and fun way! Following a holistic approach to nutrition and a science-based approach to exercise, I love helping individuals create a healthy lifestyle that they can sustain for life!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an entrepreneur, there are always struggles. The fitness industry is huge, and with that comes with a lot of competition so the biggest challenge when I launched my business was having faith in myself. I put a lot of pressure on myself and have high expectations so believing in myself was my biggest challenge. The COVID pandemic caused the biggest obstacle for my business as gyms were closed and everyone was forced to stay home. I used the time during lockdown to create a whole new website, build a fitness app and cater to more online training options for clients. I used this time to really bring up my online programs and create my membership program called the A Team. I created this program to be a very cost-effective way to help individuals with both their workouts and nutrition.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I help individuals transform their health and body through weight training and holistic nutrition. My business philosophy is about being healthy from the inside out. I help my clients feel strong, confident and learn how to find a balanced routine of working out, eating healthy and enjoying life all at the same time. I follow a science-based approach to exercise and show how regular exercise is not only incredible for your body, but it’s also going to help you feel happier and more optimistic and give you more energy. What I love about what I do is seeing how people transform both mentally and physically when they incorporate exercise and proper nutrition into their lifestyle. My programs are all following a sustainable approach and one that is encouraging and fun.
