Today we’d like to introduce you to Kwa-Weisha Floyd.
Hi Kwa-Weisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve dreamed of being a part of the hair industry since I was in the 11th grade. My hairstylists were influential in my early adulthood life and were great mentors. I began practicing on family and friends while in college, and in 2019 took the task on as a part-time hobby. In 2020, I quit my full-time job and officially became known as Riah’s Hair. Since then, I’ve continued to style both women and men with various hairstyles as a way to improve and boost confidence and appearance.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Riah’s Hair has had its share of both struggles and rewards. Starting off, I had to build a consistent clientele. This included me having to market on various social media such as Twitter, Facebook, & Instagram, provide discounts, and put personal funds towards my business. I also have a very busy toddler, so being a full-time mom and business owner can become stressful at times. Moving to a new city in 2021 was a bit of a bumpy road as my clientele decreased. However, I’ve relocated back to Greensboro and have been able to welcome my old/existing clients back as well as see some new faces. I’ve continued to learn new styles as a way to stay current with what’s popular today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Riah’s Hair, LLC?
Riah’s Hair was officially created in 2020 as I turned my hobby into a full-time business. It is named after my daughter, Sa’Riah, who is one of my greatest inspirations and reason why I do what I do. Initially, I offered passion twists, box braids, and faux locs. I’ve since then transitioned to completing soft locs, starter locs/maintenance, butterfly locs, distressed locs, and knotless braids. In 2021, I began doing Riah locs, also named after my daughter. This year, 2022, I’ve started to learn more about human hair locs.
A huge accomplishment for me this year was finishing Natural Hair Care School through Civella Beauty Academy in Goldsboro, NC. I am officially licensed and able to provide full services to my clients, including shampoo and blow-dry. In June of this year, I had the opportunity to sign a lease to work in a suit.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that I feel is most important to my success is being willing to learn and try new things. The hair industry is forever changing, and it’s critical that professionals are going with the flow of change and upgrading any old techniques. My clients push me to be better and work outside of my comfort zone.
