Meet Amanda Boyd of Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Boyd.

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for dance began very young, all due to my mother! Against my will, my mother signed me up for dance classes; as they say, the rest is history! I’m forever grateful that she could see what I could not see in myself. Along the way, I was exposed to music and theatre, which ignited the triple threat I am today! Studying the performing arts afforded me several opportunities to train, perform and travel with some of the most prestigious companies. I’ve spent over 15 years educating and training students in dance, music, and theatre at dance studios, schools, summer programs, and youth organizations. There’s never been a question of owning my dance company. It’s always been when?

Well, the time has come today. I am proud to say that I, Amanda Boyd, am the Founder and Director of House of Dance multicultural children’s dance company where we educate and empower students through dance, music, and theatre in North Charleston, South Carolina.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Smooth road? Aha, good one! There’s no such thing, but I will say that the detours and bumps along the way have strengthened the woman I am today. I do not believe that anything that has transpired in my life this far has hindered me from receiving what is meant for me! I know that each challenge was strategically designed to motivate and push me more toward the dream that I once thought was too big to obtain. I am one of the few to walk down this path, and while I sometimes feel alone, I’m constantly reminded that I am a trailblazer and that the impact on children and families for years to come makes every lesson, failure, and success worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Throughout the years, I’ve developed an arts program that focuses primarily on each student’s individual needs. The building technique is beautiful, but building character, bridging gaps, and transforming lives is the ultimate goal. Before I became a dance teacher, I was a mentor, a listening ear, and a guiding light. There’s nothing more fulfilling than being able to be the dance teacher that students can relate to, respect and trust.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 Crisis has taught me that yes, there will be times of uncertainties with so many questions without ANY answers, but if you take each day one at a time and do the best you can every day, that is good enough!
