Hidden Gems: Meet Rebecca Collins of MassageLuXe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Collins.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My husband was Director of IT for MassageLuXe, Intl for more than 20 years.

We knew early on that we wanted to open a franchise one day. A couple of years before we wanted to be ready, I quit my job doing outside sales and went to work at an existing location so I could learn everything I could before we mortgaged everything to open our first location.

We made a lot of sacrifices those first few years and worked some really long hours, but 5 spas later, I’d say it’s all been worth it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any road in life is smooth. But, having a passion for what you’re doing sure makes the bumps and turns more tolerable.

Very early in the process, we got our first look at how drastically things could go wrong when we hired the wrong contractor to do our build-out. That setback destroyed our budgets for the first 2 years so we really learned how to get creative when trying to solve a problem.

As much as I hated it at the time, it definitely prepared me for later rough spots. COVID-19 certainly brought with it a brand new set of struggles for us (and everyone else!) and we are definitely still trying to navigate some of those challenges.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
As I mentioned earlier, to open our first location we had to mortgage everything we owned so there were definitely a few sleepless nights!

I think going into business for yourself has inherent risks that are totally unavoidable, but there are certainly ways to minimize them. It is one of the reasons that we chose to open franchise locations rather than something stand-alone.

We wanted to minimize risk by joining a brand that was already proven with a team of people using their experience in the field to help us make the best decisions.
