Hidden Gems: Meet Koya Drew of Polished By Koya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Koya Drew.

Hi Koya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from Esthetics school in 2016 from Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro, NC.

I went to school initially because I was interested in learning more about makeup, at the time I only provided makeup services working at Sephora. When I was accepted into the esthetics program I learned so much more.

I learned about skincare and waxing. I grew a special love and passion for waxing. After I graduated from school, I was determined to wax full-time, and I did just that.

I went from a small salon suite rental to a storefront building in Rocky Mount, NC within the first year. From there, my business grew beyond my expectations. Within the second year, my clientele was uncontrollably growing and I was at a point where I needed help.

I decided to hire other estheticians to help my business grow. Now, I have two locations and offer training to individuals who want to learn techniques of waxing and the skillset to own their own salon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about being a business owner is smooth in my opinion, it’s a lot of pressure. Granted there are good days and bad days, but I wouldn’t trade it.

Some of the struggles I’ve come across are mainly learning as you go, there are a lot of things that go into running a business that people don’t see behind the scenes. Having mentors has been my greatest asset because just having someone to help you along the way means a lot.

Running multiple businesses can be VERY stressful, whenever something happens or goes wrong it’s not like working for someone else. You can’t depend on anyone to fix an issue or find a solution, it’s all totally on you.

Of course, being a business owner has its perks of freedom, but most of the time you’re working more and later hours to look for ways to expand and grow your business and to make sure your business is running properly.
