Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalton & Patrice Carter. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The dynamic duo, Dalton and Patrice Carter, are the husband and wife team behind Hollywood Java! They are proud Army Veterans, and in particular, Dalton served in Iraq, where he picked up the name “Hollywood” from a Command Sergeant Major that saw him all geared up from the sandstorms and wearing sunglasses. The “Good Doctor” Dr. Patrice is Hollywood’s V.P., trusty sidekick, and Assistant Barista. Hollywood Java launched in August 2018 as a pop-up coffee shop and grew into a mobile coffee bar dedicated to building a community around specialty coffee in March 2020.
Dalton and Patrice share a combined love of coffee and community, which grew out during their dating courtship. To this day, they love to search out and support local and regional coffee houses that focus on direct farmer relationships and serve delicious, quality coffee. Their decision to enter the specialty coffee business resulted from their entrepreneurial desire for flexibility, a sustainable business model, and the opportunity to build wealth and a legacy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the main obstacles/challenges initially was transitioning from being a pop-up coffee bar to a mobile coffee bar. A mobile coffee bar is like having a coffee shop on wheels, and this comes with a ton of planning, as in a coffee shop, hiring, ordering supplies, procedures and processes, insurance, taxes, etc. The physical aspect of this includes equipment and truck maintenance, logistics, event set-ups, and more. In essence, there are many moving parts and pieces to owning a mobile coffee bar, and just focusing on the coffee alone won’t cut it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Dalton, aka Hollywood, is also a filmmaker specializing in producing, directing, and creating documentary series and sketch comedies. Filmmakers are always looking for the next film gig, “Films Equals Jobs.” So between film jobs, they make coffee and build community! Because they had to travel to find film work, they also needed a business that could travel with them. Dr. Patrice Carter is the President/CEO of Breakpoint Coaching, LLC., where she mentors and trains Christian Life Coaches.
Is something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Surprisingly, we don’t have an espresso machine (not yet) in our house, so we go to our mobile coffee trailer every morning to make our coffee.
